Possible Turbo issues

Hi folks,

Seeking you kind assistance if I may. I'll set out the issue below...

2016 L405 4.4 - drives superbly most of the time.
Put your foot down to accelerate onto a dual carriageway and when you hit 3,000 rpm restricted performance cuts in and 'shuts down the power' so you can maintain about 40mph..
Turn the car off, wait 1 minute and back on again, car is back to normal.

Seems something is related to when the secondary turbo cuts in (or wants to)...

Doesn't go into restricted performance any other time.

Following some other advice, it was suggested to unplug the near side MAF sensor. Drives fine with it unplugged (in fact a little more responsive if I'm honest) and doesn't fall into restricted performance but I didn't want to push it in case it was actually going to ingest the turbo.

Anyway....

Took to a local garage that said they are approver LR servicing agents and they pulled the following... but were then unable to help any further Shocked




So I booked it in to the the next LR indy near me, who are pretty good I hear. They have had the car for a couple of days, made a couple of calls to LR apparently with some questions and have come back with what they think is a turbo shut off valve issue on the near side. (for about £650 + vat, plus the cost of reading the fault codes, plus the calls to LR, and I have no idea on the labour charge to replace this valve that sits on the back of the turbo apparently)

From what I've written above, does that sound plausable - I just want to check as the first garage charged me £130 to read codes only to tell me they can't help.

I just hate being ripped off so could do with your opinions.

Further to the above, I have collected the car as the part wasn't immediatly available and they have other bookings - its booked back in for 10 days time.

They have confirmed its the near side Turbo shut off valve that needs replacing (LR066428)

I've emailed Duckworths to see if I can get the parts price down a little as they have quoted just over £750 but can anyone advise on the time to fit this.?

The garage have quoted its about 5 hours to fit Shocked

Try double dosing Redex or SeaFoam into your fuel tank. That gave me an extra 2 years on an actuator problem on an Audi turbo. Its a nothing to lose potential short/medium term fix.

It's a 1 hour job. The valve is just above the exhaust.

Thanks all,

I'll do the Redex anyway - can't hurt and is probably worth doing for good maintenance and you never know..!

Thx Gary for the info - given where it is, is it a relatively easy task and something one could tackle at home - I don't have ramps or anything so is this one I should leave for a garage to do?

Just worries me when they have quoted " Probably 5 hours labour" at £105 per hour... Ash

Thanks all for the advice - I don;t have access to Topix but did phone LR to ask them the service time for fitting the shut off valve..

Very helpful chap told me it books at 1 hour and even gave me the service code (194263)

I guess I'll call or email the garage that completed the diagnosis and cancel the booking with them. I could book it in with my local LR main dealer but...

1. Their labour charge is £228 per hour...
2. They said they would fit it but if it didn't solve the issue i'd still have to pay them

Why are these things so difficult.. Big Cry Ash

Check you don’t have a vacuum leak, there are lots of small pipes connecting between the valve you describe and the vacuum pump located on the front N/S of the engine. There is also a pipe going from the O/S air filter box to the valve block that will cause issues if leaking or disconnected.

Also a long shot but worth checking. Your air intake for the variable geometry turbo (O/S) can get blocked by sound deadening material located in the bonnet at the rear corner, looks a bit like a black bin liner, basically it slides forwards and blocks the air intake creating a vacuum causing the secondary turbo valve to operate before commanded hence the fault code. Check out its LRtime on you tube, he does a great video on how he found this problem.

I would totally expect to still have to pay, because at the end of the day, they have done the work, and engines are complex things - it's not necessarily straightforward to diagnose.

However, I would want a garage to perform a high pressure smoke test to test for leaks.

From what you have described, it sounds more like a split boost hose or sticky actuator, both of which would not be uncommon for an SDV8.

I most definitely wouldn't touch the garage who think it's 5 hours labour for a 1 hour job. They clearly don't have a clue. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I would also expect to pay for the work they did - I'll now be in difficult situation as I might end up paying for something that didn't fix the problem, thats not LRs problem and the second garage might then say as they didn't do the work its not their fault either...

The first garage I took it to said they performed a pressure/smoke test - of course I only have their word for it bit I have no reason to suggest they didn't - They said they found no leaks.

Second garage pulled all the codes, had the car for 2 days and made a number of calls to LR who, based on the info provided, diagnosed (or confirmed the diagnosis) of the shut off valve. I would prefer not to go back to them as they quoted me the 5 hours - unless I call them up, tell that its a 1 hour job according to LR and thats what I expect to pay and see if they want to do it. Maybe I should ask them to perform a pressure test first just to confirm it isn't a pipe - I don't want to name and shame but they have a good reputation and specialise in LR...

Thanks also Dave & Kot, Yes i did watch that video first of all actually. he (and his wife) spent ages testing stuff only to find the black bag covering the intake vents under the bonnet - He makes good, and pretty amusing, videos.

I'm done... I emailed the garage with a concern that even LR Topix suggests the job to replace the shut off valve... their response...

"Hi Ashley

We always quote on what we believe the job will take from our experience dealing with Land Rover for many years. I would like a customer to receive a cheaper bill when ever possible rather than a shock when they collect the car.

From past experience, book times are rarely accurate , as times quoted are normally on a brand-new vehicle with no corrosion ect

As land rover are quoting one hour , its worth taking it to them ,being a bigger organization they are able to absorb jobs that run over as they normally have 15 or so techs working at any one time."


@DrF... I may need to reach out to the folks you suggested for a chat on how to proceed - I feel that i am throwing money away as any garage probably should do their own smoke test and diagnostics... this will be the third time I'll be paying for the same thing.. Evil or Very Mad Ash
