The 322 is a bit more practical in some respects, tumbling seats rather than just folding, larger boot capacity, manual tailgate can be more convenient inside a garage if a powered one would be damaged if it opened unexpectedly. My 2012 WM had better audio than my 2017MY 5.0SC has, a 405 with the signature reference system may well be better, but was a £4,000 option so not that many cars have it. The 2012 car did suffer badly from corrosion, tailgate, wheel arches, trim, wheels, Scottish climate and road salt unhelpful, but this was the main reason I changed, I got fed up with having to have the wheel arches treated and repainted every year from year two (and LR declined any contribution under the corrosion warranty) Shocked Earlier 322s do have better seats, I'd say there is not much between 322 and 405 with ventilated seats. As mentioned above the TDV8 322 is the better tow car. My 322s were more troublesome and unreliable than my 405 has been to date.

The 405 offers notably better performance and refinement, especially the 5.0SC. It seems a bit harder on suspension bushes and the like, and I have had some galvanic corrosion (and other corrosion such as anti roll control pipework) problems. I've never regretted moving to the 405 and regard it as the better product.

But much depends on the condition of the cars you consider, a badly maintained 405 may be more trouble than a really good 322. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Used L405 prices have certainly dropped significantly since I last looked. £25k gets you something very nice if you can afford the £10k a year insurance I'd have to pay here in London...... 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

The corrosion on the L405 is worse in some ways! On the L322's it's the cills that corrode and they can be repaired fairly easily.

On the L405 it's the aluminium body that corrodes due to it having a steel subframe bolted to it and the corrosion can be much worse and I'd imagine an awful lot more difficult to repair.

Thanks David, that's an interesting thread, and frankly quite shocking.

You would think there would be an non-conductive isolator gasket between the two dissimilar metals to prevent such bimetallic corrosion. A simple rubber / plastic gasket between the two components would solve the issue!

I checked the parts diagrams and couldn't see anything. LR037508 looked like a candidate, but it's actually painted steel from the looks of it, and the oval parts you can see on top of the subframe mounts on the thread you originally linked.

Having said the above, I do wonder if that vehicle has been in a salt water flood, or spent time launching boats? The ARC pipes and fuel tank guard show quite a bit of surface corrosion.

Anyone know how long the L405 anti-corrosion warranty is? Audi for example have a 12 year corrosion warranty on their aluminium bodies. All I could find with a quick Google search was 6 years from LR... pathetic frankly. 1992 RR Classic 3.9 efi Vogue

I've just bought myself a late L322 4.4TDV8 with 50,000 miles and I couldn't be happier ....to me the L322 is the last real range Rover.
I test drove a 2018 L405 with the same engine a few weeks ago it really was a superb vehicle very very impressed I almost bought it, but it was too pretty for me and now I sit in my L322 smiling at £25k ive saved Thumbs Up Dyslexic, so please bear with my grandma and spells.....

I was in this same predicament when replacing my 07 VSE tdv8.
I looked at earlyish 405’s and later 322’s and I really love the look of the 405, but I don’t know, there is just something missing for me- I much prefer the interiors of the 322’s. I am someone who loves buttons and stuff and things and the 405’s are very minimalist in that way- and I think the outside looks a bit too soft for me, also the early ones seem a little fragile as is the case with most next gen shape cars, a few early bugs to fix that’s usually sorted a few years in and on facelift versions. I know the 322’s are not exactly bullet proof in this respect but any issues are well documented now and still things that can be tackled by most people handy with tools. I love the rugged squareness of the 322 so eventually I settled on a 2010-2012 era l322 in the end.
I will step into the 405 at some point- but I’m not ready to not have a 322 in my ownership just yet 2009 (2010 MY) 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography

Just looking around on Autotrader I can see that there are increasing numbers of 2013 4.4 SDV8 405s for less money than their equivalent 2012 L322 models.

To the point where the cheapest AB 405 for £12.9k for 80k miles vs cheapest < 100k miles L322 is £14.5 for a CAT S example, next L322 is £17k for 90k miles and there are 2 L322 2012 ABs for under £17k but 3 sub £17k 2013 405 ABs.

So good 2013 405s are slipping below the price of good 2012 L322s now and I expect facelift L322s are going to hold their price whilst early 405s continue to plummet.

Hold on to your 322s for now, let's see how things progress through the summer. Fuji White / Jet 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster

I too am considering changing from L322 to L405, hard to know what to do, although the overall size of the L405 does put me off a little.
