Removing Gear Selector/Shifter

Hi all,

I have a 2014 Full Fat Long Wheel Base which has a gear selector which decided to retire Crying or Very sad .

When I start the car, it pops up but will not let me shift out of park.

I have tried to remove it but seem to be stuck. I removed both sides of the center console (leather wrapped pieces) and removed the rear air vent section. I cant seem to get the wood trim off the console to get the shifter out.

Does the whole console need to be removed from the car?

I have attached pictures of where I am at now.

It requires the brake to be pressed to allow you to move it from Park (as you know). I wonder if the switch on the brake pedal is broken thus not allowing it out of Park. I also wonder if the switch is shared with the brake lights and can therefore be tested by simply checking that the brake lights work.

Yes, you need to remove the center console. There is a good video on Youtube on how to it. ----------

I think the whole unit needs to be moved. My gear selector was replaced under warranty and the dealer had to replace the lower glovebox lid as the leather had been cut by the unit being moved across. As the dealer did the work I'm afraid I can't say what the steps required are, sorry. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Definitely the gear selector. Already ruled out the brake stop switch in the pedal.

I was hoping not to have to remove the whole console, but it appears I will have to.

I have marked two screw holes, have you removed them? There is also two hidden screws behind the rear air vents you mentioned you removed earlier… Thumbs Up

I removed the two you circled, however I dont recall
removing the two at the rear air vents. Will try that.
Will this be enough to remove the panel, or still need
to slide it back to get the top panel off?

Once you’ve removed the screws you will be able to lift the rear up and slide it towards the rear of the car. You will then need to turn yourself into a pretzel to unhook the wiring plugs!!! 🔌
