How To: Fit L460 13.3" Curved infotainment screen L405

I've written lots of guides for the L322, but this will be my first guide for the L405.

This guide applies to both the Bosch and Harmon Kardon (the interim screen in 2017) systems fitted in the L405 (although you need a slightly different variant of looms for the Harman Kardon screens).

The screen is a 13.3" curved display, almost an exact replica of that fitted in the newest Range Rover, the L460. I opted for 8GB of RAM with 128GB internal storage, to ensure excellent responsiveness.

The screen piggybacks the old system, so you retain both the full functionality of the old system, as well as the new system by toggling between the two using a shortcut on the screen. The Android side of the new screen means any apps can be installed through the Play Store, including Google Maps, there's Google voice assistant, and wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay.

Difficulty: Medium

Time: 2-3 hours

Tools Required:

Torx screwdriver (primarily T20) and a mini Torx set (T5 to T10)
Microfibre Cloth
Insulation Tape
Plastic trim tools
Foam sheet (for wrapping around one of the old screen sides)
Towel (to place over your centre console to prevent damage)
A photo of your button layout

Step 1: Remove the dash fascia (2 minutes)

Pull at the bottom and then lever out the top gently. The fascia should pull off quite easily.

Unscrew the 4x T20 screws on the metal surround and remove.

Use the opportunity to clean the dust out of the microphone (circled).

Step 2: Remove the screen sides (5 minutes)

There's a T20 screw at the top and bottom of each side. Unscrew and unplug. Set aside the left one for later.

Step 3: Remove the display (5 minutes)

Unscrew the 4x T20 screws to remove the display.

Unplug all connectors by pressing the tabs.

Step 4: Remove the disc drive (10 minutes)

Begin by pulling the silver trims towards you to remove (these don't need any force).

Next, pull off the trim around your climate panel (no force required).

This will reveal 4x T20 screws to remove the climate panel. Remove, unplug and set aside.

Remove the 2 screws to release the disc drive. Don't remove the drive, just move it forwards and remove this plug.

Grab the orange cable harness from the kit, plugging into the back of the disc drive and the existing loom.

Refit the disc drive and climate panel.

Step 5: Locate the USBs, 4G and GPS antennas and system speaker (30 minutes)

My previous experience is that GPS and 4G signal struggles behind the heated screen, so my recommendation is to spend these extra 30 minutes locating them in a more suitable location.

First, remove the passenger side trim panel.

Next, pop off the 'Airbag' cover and remove the M8 bolt. Gently pry the A pillar trim off and upwards and set it aside.

Next, use the two tabs on the glove box to drop it down to access the pollen filter and fuse box.

Locate and secure the 4G antenna mid-way up the pillar, to not foul the airbag. Then push the cable down through the hole, securing it to the marked loom.

Locate the GPS on the underside of the trim marked in blue and push the cable through the same route as the one for the 4G antenna.

Secure them to the back of the glove box with cable ties.

Push the cables up from the back right of the glove box into the stereo space and pull the surplus cable through.

Meanwhile, from the main screen loom, feed the USBs and sim card holder down into this recess for later ease of access should it be required.

Now locate the system speaker onto this panel.

Step 6: Migrate the circuit boards (20 minutes)

Remove the 4x T10 screws to open up the original infotainment unit.

Flip the ribbon cable clamp up to release the ribbon cable from the screen.

Remove the 9x T8 screws to release the circuit board.

Remove the remaining T8 screws to release the smaller circuit board (has the plugs on the other side).

Remove the 4x Philips screws on the carcass for the new screen, disconnect the 4G and GPS antenna cables and migrate and install the 2x PCBs into this carcass, connecting the ribbon cable to the PCB for the new screen.

Re-assemble the carcass for the new screen.

Step 7: Install the new screen carcass and looms into the car (30 minutes)

Push the 2x side button cables into the cavity. Grab the left one and connect this piggyback loom.

Reconnect the left side screen buttons to the piggyback loom, wrap and tape with foam and push to the back of the stereo cavity.

Reconnect all the original connectors plus the 4G, GPS, microphone (i located the microphone on the metal side trim) and external speaker connectors and push the screen carcass into place. It gets very congested inside the cavity, so this may take multiple attempts.

Once in place without resistance, use 4x T20 screws to secure the carcass in place.

Refit the metal side panels.

Step 8: Remove the plastic trim (5 minutes)

For some reason, this comes pre-installed but for fitment, it needs removing. Release the 6x Philips screws and set aside.

Step 9: Reinstall the dash fascia (5 minutes)

Now the plastic trim is removed, you can reinstall the dash fascia. Make sure the top clips are aligned and then press firmly all around the panel, to slot it all back into place.

Re-fit the plastic trim.

Step 10: Fit the screen (5 minutes)

Install the 4x plastic lugs included in the kit onto the back of the screen then press firmly all around the screen evenly distributing the pressure until you hear all 4 of these plugs ping into place in the dash mount.

Turn on the ignition, check the screen boots, toggle to the old system and select audio source as 'AUX'. You may also wish to delete the old system from your phone's Bluetooth, so that it only connects to the new screen in future.

Having performed the job now and it not being such the marathon it is on the L322, I am happy to supply and fit screens at my workshop near Southampton for anyone wanting one.

Indeed an impressive write up - Can I ask what unit you sourced, where from and an idea on price.

There is a firm that does a unit like this but it was north of £2k last time I looked.

I'd be happy to do this upgrade if the price wasn't too bad.

In your opinion, is it a good unit..? any downsides to consider.?

Does the top of the screen divert a lot of the air coming out of the vents..??

Oh, and I think that "microphone" that's near the steering column and all dusty is a sensor for the HVAC unit....

Hey @GaryRR; where are you sourcing the head units ?

I ask as I would like to update the screen on my L322 from the OEM unit to a bigger one that fits from trim to trim. I already have an IDCORE unit installed and working with the OEM unit but I have not used the original unit buttons for a year and they take up space which could be used for a wider screen.

I’m really wary of putting in some low quality unit as I don’t want to be dismantling the dash every month due to component unreliability. ( The IDCORE has proved fine over the last year ). TDV8 4.4 2012

All of the Aoonav screens are good and they have good technical support.

Re the blowers, probably the angle of the photo. The screen in the L405 only slightly overlaps the vents. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Can I ask, if you're using the Android stuff ( nav, dab etc ) ... what happens when you reverse ? Does the system switch to the standard reversing camera of the car ? Or do you need to add another camera ?

and ( sorry )

Do you know if you canhave a second AV / camera input? What I would love to have as a setup is when towing the horse trailer, be able to listen to the radio, but have up on the display a trailer camera to watch what the hayburner is upto in the trailer. Wouldn't the first time we've got to the end of the journey and the daft thing has got itself stuck around the haynet. V8 or else ...

Yes and yes. You retain the old system as well as the new system, so get all original functionality also. When you select reverse, the reverse camera automatically comes up on the screen.

The screen has both a connection for an ADAS dash camera and also video in input and app for any video/camera input you wish to add. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

On the whole - great screen. No screen is ever perfect (including the manufacturer fitted ones!).

The downsides:

- takes 20 seconds or so to boot. Anyone with the 2016-> vehicles will be familiar with this wait anyway, as the stock system also takes a while

- pressing the buttons on the climate panel (e.g. seats) won't open up the relevant screens - you need to press the 'Car' icon on the screen first to switch to the old screen.

- sat nav (on the screen) and Bluetooth comes through the external speaker. Bluetooth is easily resolved by leaving your phone connected to the car's stock system. For sat nav, if an issue, this is resolved by instead using wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, or fitting an aftermarket sound module behind the screen that sends that audio through the AUX also. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
