L405 V8: Crankcase Fumes in Cabin

I have an intermittent problem with my L405. There is a smell of what seems like crankcase fumes in the cabin sometimes.

I've read a few topics here about exhaust fumes coming in the cabin, but it doesn't smell like that to me. It smells like you've taken the oil cap off and sniffed the hole.

It doesn't happen all the time, and not when cold that I've noticed. But when warm and driving about, it tends to creep up on you.

I wondered if there is anything known to cause this? Some kind of crankcase breather blocked, or some pipe known to split that would cause this? There are no visible oil leaks I can see.

It used to be just occasionally, making you wonder if its a vehicle in front or something. But now its more often and there is not a vehicle in front. It comes and goes, so perhaps dependent on driving. I notice it more around town than on the motorway. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black

It'll likely either be an oil cooler leak (common problem) or some spilt oil down in the centre of the V of the engine during an oil change. Kev

More like the oil cooler I think, many thanks. I'll get it fixed under warranty at the stealer. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black

I thought I'd follow up on this.

knwatkins was spot on. Oil cooler leaks into the V, and when you give it the beans, the oil blows back onto the exhaust causing the smell.

Being fixed by Sytner as we speak under warranty along with a few other things. I'm glad I bought the warranty now with the car. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black

I had and still have this intermittent issue I had the oil cooler replaced along with the rings at the back of the cooler which can cause a small drip also. I had no issues for a few months then suddenly that dreadful smell again with the visible smoke at the back of the engine bay. The strange thing is may be a coincidence but I'm sure the car was doing a DPF regen when smell and smoke appeared again. This issue is turning out to be pain the ass to diagnose now and one of the many issues with this model L405! Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 SDV8 SVO Stying Pack

Have you had the oil feed hoses at the back top of the engine inspected? They can drip oil onto the exhaust and bell housing, which will create some nasty smells that get sucked into the cabin.

The o-rings on the two feed hoses are a known failure. They can't be seen, but a mirror or a photo on a phone will show if they're leaking. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
