Rear brake calipers

Is it worth refurbing these or just replacing them entirely? Its actually a sport Sad

my rear left is yeah, currently driving around with lovely metal on metal.

ive got the full compliment at the moment to basically redo all the suspension of the rear with fresh pads/discs.

so seemed sensible to refurb the calipers. Its actually a sport Sad

It's not a difficult job with the right tools although depends on how badly the piston is siezed in the bore and if there is any corrosion to the bore. Do you have a compressor to blow the pistons out? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

i do have a compressor, so should be simple enough, is it worth checking them, if the corrosion isnt too bad to clean them down/respray then fresh piston/seals? and if fooked then replace.

currently i imagine the car will be on stirrups for a few weeks anyways. Its actually a sport Sad

its tempting but close to 400quid vs like 60quid and a couple of hours work

especially when i can throw that 400quid at the subframe bushings Its actually a sport Sad

I just rebuilt my rear callipers and its not a difficult job with new pistons. (With new Brembo disks and pads). The seized one would not blow out with air.
When its still on the car, remove the pads and use the brake pedal to push the piston out a reasonable way. Don't go too made and push it all the way out a the fluid will go everywhere.

To get mine out I had to get a large stilson wrench on the piston and managed to get it to rotate. Then rotated and pulled with a pair of mole grips on the pisiton.

After bleeding I pushed hard on the pedal and the small bit of solid pipe on the flexible on the top wishbone burst!

So I was luck it happened then and not when I'm towing the caravan in a few weeks.

So I would change the flexible on both sides too if they look a little rusty.

Oh and isn't the pad wear indicator the worse design ever. Whoever though of hiding the connector inside a box up behind the wheel arch plastic. 2011 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Buckingham Blue

Definetly change the brake pipes - mine were ready to fracture when I took it all apart.
An alternative method it you already have the calipers removed and compressed air will not move the pistons is to screw an M10 x 1 grease nipple in to where the bleed nipple goes and with the inlet sealed off (mole grips on a rubber section - you're going to change them anyway) pump grease in. This will push the piston out without too much effort. L405 2018 5.0 S/C

AUTODOC do regular offers on TRW branded rear calipers. I saw these last week at around the £90 mark ( each ) after a 45% discount. Perhaps, keep/ refurb the carriers and traveler pins and fit a pair of new ones at that price. TDV8 4.4 2012
