4.4D or Hybrid?

I’m contemplating what’s next after my L322 and I’m wanting a 2018+ L405. However, I’m torn.

I can’t decide between the 4.4 diesel (having had a 3.6 TDV8) or the hybrid (it’s a close to an electric as I’ll get at the moment).

My 3.6 averages about 28, can get 35 in the motorway, so obviously the 4.4 is attractive but… thinking about the hybrid as an alternative and wondered:
a) how reliable they are
b) what mpg I’m likely to get on the motorway from a petrol vampire. 🤣

Probably going to be a year away, but want to start getting my head in the right place before I start looking. Eager to hear people’s views of both please. Tym

If it sticks, force it. If it breaks, it needs replacing anyway.

I had a 2019 P400e. Nice car and very quiet at low revs. Drive it hard and the 2 litre petrol engine doesn't like it, noisy too. I had multiple break down issues with the battery cooling system where it leaked fluid everywhere. Repaired twice and it did it again. I believe this has been a recall fix now. The 25 mile of electric range was actually about 18 so really not worth it.

Managed 28-32 mpg on a run depending on the terrain. Changed it for a P525 which is a hoot. No reliability issues for me so far (fingers crossed) and averaging 24 - 27 so not too bad for a 5 litre. Enjoy your research! 2005 L322 Vogue Gold gone

Test drive one. Make sure you run down the electric, that won’t take too long. Then find a steep hill to drive up.

So… the 525 is just petrol? I’m not familiar with the L405 models.

Such a short range in the hybrid doesn’t seem worth bothering with, even with the green brownie points taken into consideration.

Looks like I’ll stick with the 4.4 diesel plan, when it eventually happens, thank you.

Also… as more electrics take to the road, this can only drive the price of diesel down due to reduced demand 😉 Tym

Wouldn’t reduced demand drive prices up as economies of scale fall out of favour for diesel? 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

I think the P400e is an ideal solution in the right circumstances. I haven’t got one but the majority of our journeys are under 20 miles so the electric would cover that and then use the petrol engine for longer journeys.

I would have to test drive one to see if some of the reports are accurate concerning the power when using the petrol engine alone. But for every negative report I’ve read there seems to be 2 that say it’s fine.

It’s all in the eye of the beholder as they say, but I would personally consider one.

No it wouldn’t. First year economics, if the demand for a product goes up, so does the prices; if the demand falls, so does the price. If the supply falls, the price goes up and if the supply increases then the prices falls. Tym
