Ignition ON without the keys!!!!

One for the technical chaps here......

Cleaning the TDV8 yesterday and whilst hoovering in the drivers footwell I found a switch (near the OBD port) which looks like an electric window switch from a Mondeo Shocked Shocked

Pressed it both ways and discovered the same result........ Ignition comes on, radio comes on, steering wheel moves...... just like inserting the ignition key. All this while the keys are still in my pocket!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Any ideas??? Confused The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

Cheers Martin. Except in that thread BBS says that pressing the switch should have no effect...... Confused

So, the answer is hinted at, but not at all clarified. In fact, I feel worse now that my switch seems to turn the car on with all but the starter Confused The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

Just been out to check......

+ve terminal of the battery has a substantial metal 'T-piece' attached to it. There seems to be some sort of relay connected under the 'T' from which the main (red) cable goes into the engine compartment - presumably for the starter motor. On top of the 'T' there is another cable attachment which runs into a plastic covered loom carrier at the back of the battery and goes off into the body - presumably for all the ignition-on items. Confused

There are no signs of anything 'left loose' or stuffed down the side of the battery at all. The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

I wish mine did this, when I'm detailing the interior I would like to have the radio on without the constant bong for leaving the key in the ign...

Mine doesn't have the switch at all, I've looked all round the footwell area to find it.

Is this what the dealers use for cars in the showroom so that punters can alter seats etc without the keys being in? Often wondered how they managed that. Discovery 4 HSE

No good for that..... What I omitted to say was that I had to keep the switch depressed (either way) to achieve the 'ignition on' result. Confused

Still not got an answer as to whether or not this is how it should be though. Neutral The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

On the other forum there's a post about this switch. No one knows exactly what it is for, but according to general knowledge, it has something to do with the times when you need to tow the car.

And for all i know, only 2007my-... have got this switch. All previous cars may have this switch somewhere else.

I always thought it was the transport mode switch so that when the car is strapped down on the low loader the suspension didn’t do anything. Much like the inhibit switch on the classics.

This is an odd one for the switch to turn the ignition on - over on RRNet, there is a thread about a similar switch being installed for US spec vehicles to disconnect the battery. This was to avoid battery discharge whilst the vehicle was being shipped to the US and in lengthy storage. As most of us know a battery on a FFRR discharges over a couple of weeks...

have you checked and double checked the battery Ken, mine had a dead cell which speeded up the discharge to 2 or 3 days as well.

Two garages tested mine and said it was OK, I stuck out with the main agent who re-tested it and then found the fault...

LR replaced it under warranty.

OR:

They found the "actual" problem and fixed that for 50p and then charged you/LR warranty £150 for a replacement battery?
