My 2011 TDV8 4.4, Diesel heater on start up smokes very heavy for about 30 seconds then is fine, bit embarrassing as seams to do it at traffic lights or junctions doh. Anyone else have the same symptoms . Mercedes AMG w207

My D4 does it although the RR 405 doesn’t ..!
Stops after short while…. Amazing bit of kit though!

Need to replace a burning chamber.

Is a smoking FBH bad ? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

No its not. But it's progressive, the burner is full of soot and going worst and worst. Soon it may be that it won't fire up anymore.

It can`t be cleaned. Its possible to replace evaporator mesh only, but for that you need to saw burning chamber apart and after replacement weld it back together. + new gasket 100%.
But quite often there is other issues like cracked or bended tube so you never know what you will find inside.
Best option is to find on Ebay brand new Webasto (250-350€). Not matter is it pre-heater or additional heater, diesel or petrol. Not matter is it Thermo Top C, E, Z or P. Burner*, blower and body will always be the same. In this case you will get compleatly brand new FBH. Just install your ECU and water pump.
* Petrol burning chamber can be used on diesel FBH, but not other way.
