That’s not ideal but I guess over a year of motoring the use of full electric would improve it. Do you have a rough idea what your mpg over a year has been? With the amount of travel you do would a diesel have not made more sense for you?

I said before, it makes sense if you travel in the city most of the time. Our daily trips average 12-15 miles so there is zero (or negligible) gas consumption. We make longer trips every few months and then it's the mpg mentioned above. If there were longer daily commutes of course a diesel would be better.

Fair enough. I guess like choosing any engine it’s about how you use it. I like the idea of one as at my next FF but I have other cars for short journeys so may not make sense. 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

Hello all, looking to get back in the FF fold, potentially with an L405 P400e and was drawn to this thread which has a lot of useful info. I currently have a hybrid Mini and it can recharge its battery in Battery Save mode. Can the P400e also do this? Not a deal breaker but it is useful.

I don’t have the answer to your question but glad I started a thread that you have found useful.

I have been surprised by the fall in prices of L405’s and especially the P400e’s. Seem like they have dropped £20k since early this year so probably a good to be in the market. What spec are you after out of interest? 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

Yes, I was doing some searches on Autotrader using various criteria, one of which was hybrid petrol vehicles with 4x4 capability and under £50k. This threw up a lot of RRs and RRSs, which surprised me. Potentially going to look at this one: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/2...t=distance

Also been looking at them. A friend has a long wheel defender with the P400 E he says he can get 30 miles if not too heavy on the accelerator likewise it will do 30mpg if careful. However he has just encountered the problem with the heating element when on battery alone. Doing a bit of research this issue is shared by a lot of EV manufacturers. I read about one RR Sport owner who has had 3 replaced under warranty and it’s circa £1k a time if parts are available. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

It doesn’t charge its battery in any mode unfortunately. You can regen a bit on a long down hill but the battery save mode doesn’t add anything. 2018 P400e AB LWB

There's absolutely no point in using the IC engine to charge the battery, it's one of the most expensive and inefficient ways to generate electricity. BMW i3 Electric Car

I was really after one of these before I got another SDV8 L405 as I couldn't justify the additional outlay as I knew values would trend down quickly.

They do seem a good option, reassuring that there is some sensible advice in the thread and not the usual negative stuff from people missing the point of one.

For my use case it would have worked well, most of my short journeys are sub 10miles and around small towns, the silence and zero warm up times (esp. vs a diesel) is appealing and the flexibility to pop it back on charge when home to top up would likely mean the ICE unit only got used on longer trips on Mway etc.

Appreciate this doesn't help your decision, but good luck

My comments were in response to a Hybrid vehicle IF it's a Plug In Hybrid then it's totally different and would work well for regular short journeys etc. We had an Outlander PHEV for 6 years, wifey driving 6 mile return journey to work daily with longer trips once per week, perfect fit. BMW i3 Electric Car

Yes! Will post some pics in the Welcome thread when it stops raining (which being Cumbria, could be Easter).

If it’s any help I’ve been really pleased with mine. My run back and forth to work can just about be done in all electric but it’s not much fun so I let it do its hybrid thing. Traffic jams are made all the more palatable knowing you’re not burning any juice unnecessarily. The last 10k kms I’ve averaged 38.6 real mpg (measured by fill ups not the inboard computer); not bad considering a good 4k kms were cross continental runs where the battery didn’t help much.

Downsides are the comically small boot due to the battery pack and the executive seats (my Tesla model s is bigger) , and the additional weight which impacts handling. 2018 P400e AB LWB
