“Dieselgate’ claims

My social media accounts are being bombarded with adverts saying I could claim ‘up to £10,000’ from JLR if i’ve bought a diesel car from them since 2008. Since then I’ve had 5 JLR diesel cars, so in theory I’m quids in. But I’m a natural sceptic and my guess is, should I agree for one of these companies to follow this up, they’d take most of whatever came back. I did wonder if anyone on here has had a go though and what the outcome was?

I’m guessing that because the claim is linked to you by name and against a specific car, JLR will know you’ve claimed against them, which, should you need some goodwill from them in future, may be a problem!

What’s the general consensus?

Rolling with laughter
Let me guess that these companies want money off you to process your 'claim'. Let me also guess after an initial payment they then want more money to secure your claim and then later still more money etc
Let me not guess but be 100% sure you will never see £10000 nor any of the money you paid to get it. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

The biggest causes of this type of scamming are a)The second, third & fourth words in the OP and b)The inherent greed people have to a greater or lesser degree.

Hard to argue with those words of wisdom: generally, if it sounds too good to be true, it is. Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Pretty much what I thought too, but was curious to see if anyone had tried. The other issue with this sort of thying is the harvesting of personal data, which I find objectionable!

Personally, being an old f*rt is far less risky: “Social Media, -what’s that?” Laughing
I don’t even have voicemail on my phone. Sad, I know.
But no scam callers, if it’s no-one I know, it doesn’t get answered.
I’ll probably retire to a cave in the Outer Hebrides….. Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

I wouldn't try on the principal that if I hadn't been financially disadvantaged or suffered a physical loss then such a claim would be theft but maybe I'm just old fashioned..... 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

It is a genuine thing - start a legal action on the premise that if one auto maker was using cheat devices, then so were all the rest !
That’s some leap ..and the evidence may not back that up
There is no evidence that i know of that JLR were using cheat devices

Most of these claims are led by ambulance chasers…but there are a few reputable law firms involved too.
Don’t know the details of how it works..but i think you buy an insurance policy…so some money up front..to pay for the legal fees if you lose
And the chasers / law firms take a significant percentage if you win

As sone folk point out here, even if you win….how much damage has there been and what will a court award?

Matter of personal choice if you want to chance your arm IMHO. But not for me. Do i lie awake at night worrying that JLR used cheat devices and they didn’t tell me…and that if i had known i would not have bought a full fatty?
