Range Rover L322 3.6 TD V8 Vogue

I’m looking to buy a Range Rover for around £3000. ive found one local in a rare colour and matching interior. From the advert:

2007 Range Rover Vogue 3.6 TDV8, 195k miles, 4 previous owners. Giverney Green with the rare Aspen Green leather interior. MOT until Jan-24.Range Rover enthusiasts will recognise how rare the Giverney Green colour is along with the Jaguar V8 engine, as the majority in this colour had the earlier BMW engine. The car benefits from 4 new Pirelli Scorpion tyres and later L405 Range Rover 20" alloy wheels. The air conditioning has been re-gassed. A new suspension airbag has been fitted in July 2022. Air suspension works perfectly with no leaks. Brand new brake pads and discs fitted Aug-23 with invoice. The car also had a gearbox oil service at the Williams Land Rover main dealer in Manchester in 2021.Overall condition of the car is fair for age and mileage- the paintwork is generally good with superficial rust areas to the upper tailgate (usual issue on L322Range Rovers) and on the rear wheel arches, inner rear wheel arches. The interior is also in very good condition, with some wear to the drivers seat but otherwise it is fair for the age and mileage. There is a partial service history with the car and it was serviced most recently in February 2021. The car drives well and offers the usual Vogue specification, including Oxford leather interior, heated steering wheel, sliding sunroof and Sat Nav.Known faults: Rear view camera doesn?t work, rear wash requires attention and slight steering rack clung during slow turns. Gearbox is slightly jumpy going up hills. Occasionally flashes up 'Transmission Fault? on the dashboard. Gearbox may require attention

Sounds like a soon to be "breaking for parts" to me unless you want to consider a new box and/or converter and some serious body panel replacing with paint etc. among other things.

And the 3.6 tdv8 is a Ford derived engine as far as I know.

It is indeed a Ford engine.

Okay, best avoid it then. It’s a shame as it’s a nice colour and it being a rare colour I liked it. What alternative would you go for? I don’t mind upping the budget say £8k.

I know of a mechanically solid one but needs some cosmetic work inside to get it back to tip top….

Go for a colour you can live with with the specs you like and low owner car if you find one.
Good service history would be good to have too.
You can always change (bits of) the interior.
See if it drives nice and shifts well and see if the needle on the rev counter is steady just after a shift while keeping the accelerator in the same position. Box might be low on oil but it shouldn't be really and the convertor may be on the way to the door.
It might have the occasional puff of black smoke under hard acceleration (3.6) if it has been driven wearing slippers for a while but it should clear pretty quickly.

Ours is a two owner car with the book stamped in the right places and even though it had some slight damage on the right hand rear we bought it. Plenty of new/fairly recent parts to be found on the vehicle so I had faith in it.
Cosmetics are less important to fix than technical bits.

Hope you'll find a good one.
Cheers, Ard

As always with an L322 the purchase price does not reflect the cost ownership and older models such as the 3.6 can end up being more expensive as they have fail prone big ticket items such as turbo's and gearboxes. If your purchase budget can't stretch to a high mile but well looked after 4.4 then keep saving until it does ( + a 30% contingency fee) 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Ideally I would like a petrol but they are quite rare and hard to get in a nice Vogue or Vogue SE spec.
