Big virtual pint to Kev! and another to eagle eyed Jay… you’re right, I spotted it myself earlier after I tinkered and removed it…there’s no bung! Where the hell has that gone?!? I did find a post about someone cleaning their housing out and I saw what looked like a reverse conical bung and I realised I didn’t have that bit. Searched the net and reckon it must come as part of the housing assembly and can’t find a separate one. I’ve made one from nitrile rubber and fitted it along with the reshaping of the tangs (Kev) and just took it for a 10 mile run and not a sign of smoke. So thanks again to you all as I just wouldn’t have looked or even dreamt that anything was wrong regarding oil filter after changing it in Aug, if Rob hadn’t mentioned the spring in the first place. The learning never ends with these rangies and the wealth of knowledge from everyone here makes keeping them on the road possible. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography Ipanema sand

Yes Kevin it was your pics that gave it away, thank you. I did look at mine and thought well that doesn’t look very trick as a seal, I’d have never thought it would have disintegrated or broke off previously. I dread to think how long that has been gone as I’ve done 2 changes since Oct last year and it has never shown any symptoms of smoking until today (with the last change in Aug)! Thanks again 2011 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography Ipanema sand

Seems strange that it has only just started smoking but fingers crossed for you.

Yes indeed, that’s why I would never have thought to look. Why so long? I’ve towed the caravan and used it for about 1000 miles since I changed the oil filter with no issues until today. The wife and daughter did a quick exit when we got home as they had visions of a repeat of a runaway I had when our old Disco turbo went and fuelled itself on its whole contents of engine oil and I had the ignition off and keys in hand whilst outside vehicle. My thoughts now are where has it gone/how long has it been missing? There was the remains of a hard plastic stub in the spring so I’m guessing the rubber part has deteriorated and broke up? Dunno…Strange. Many thanks again though. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography Ipanema sand

I would never have even looked without Rob’s suggestion and me consequently taking a pic and taking the spring out. I have to be honest I don’t think I’ve ever looked in there - quite awkward distance to get over the top to look straight down - as I just remove filter, check for any metal in the filter (and rubber now) and replace. Definitely seems trivial but with dramatic symptoms if not correct. It felt like it for me anyway. Maybe it takes a while to build up before it gets as bad as I had it? 2011 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography Ipanema sand

I didn’t find that thread earlier Rob. I think I was too blinkered into thinking it had to be turbo related. Great that Jaguar has now put on the oil scavenge mod. I do have a spare scavenge pump that I replaced with a new one that didn’t fix the secondary smoke screen. The one I removed looked like new internally so I was sceptical after I fitted the new one. Might have a play now thanks to Jags reveal after I find a new spring with correct drain bung fitted. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography Ipanema sand

It could have become lodged further down the hole after it broke off and still acting to block the oil flow but over time it has moved or further disintegrated and thus the sudden issue. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322) |

Jay, yeah true. I did have a look down there and nothing evident but obviously it’s quite possible. Unless it’s been like it for sometime and it just got discarded previously and was in the folds of the filter and not spotted, back to my comment of doing as much work as I can myself so I know it’s done right. (Mine has full LR s/h so would have been done correctly and with care…right?) Thanks go out to Jaguar3 also for explaining how the system works and the role this little bung plays. Ive tried to work out previously his ‘simple mod’ to the scavenge pump (DrRobs thread link) but I was looking in to the pressure differential side or maybe an nrv to get the result and obviously wrong. I applaud his knowledge to have faith in drilling the housing to provide a continuous positive supply, simple but genius when you know how - isn’t it always the case? With the help of you kind folks here I have learnt so much in one day about yet another system on these vehicles, I just hope I haven’t overstayed my welcome with questions and long replies? I hope this becomes yet another little nuance that gets checked for and not jump to the same conclusion that I initially did thinking it might be turbo seal issue not knowing enough about the system (the smoke coming out would be quite alarming for anyone) - I guess if it’s happened to me it could have with someone else? Now to wait for my replacement filter housing to arrive and swap the drain spring over to a none temporary fix and get my old scavenge pump out and get modding!! 2011 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography Ipanema sand

Even on cars with the cap still in place it's possible that it's worn over time and is no longer providing a 100% seal. Is it possible to buy the spring and seal as a separate part? I assume there is a non return valve on the regular oil return pathway to prevent the oil draining away after engine shutoff? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322) |

I can’t find on any parts diagram this part being available, not saying it’s not but I haven’t found it yet. I am wondering if, like the orings for the oil pipes on the back of the cooler, its part of the housing and not available separately? There might be a market out there even if is just for a replacement bung - it only has to be secured in the hole in the spring, cover the hole and be oil and heat resistant as it’s squashed in place by the spring when the filter is fitted. Jag did say that you can just plug the hole underneath it but won’t drain filter housing when you unscrew filter so will just have to suck out the residual with filter removed, no hardship to be honest. I was thinking of going down this route and may do if anything like this happens again. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography Ipanema sand

I believe from others that it will drain back after shutdown and can give a brief oil pressure light flicker as it fills the housing back up on startup, if it isn’t seated properly? or even there in my case! The seal on the housing should provide some vacuum to prevent a rapid drain back I would think but I can’t see any other valve. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography Ipanema sand
