ZF8 HP70 Torque Converter

I'm interested to hear if anyone has had any problems with the 8 speed torque converter in gears 1,2 and 3.
Has anyone had to have the torque converter replaced?
If so, what were symptoms?

Soft and sloppy and the rpm's rising while it changes gear.
It changes more crisply with more aggressive throttle.
If I try to accelerate fast from a stand still then the engine revs rise and then thumps into gear.
Gentle take offs have a little bump as it changes to second. Once it is in 4th everything is nice and smooth.
I've never driven another Range Rover for comparison.
It has had the fluid changed four times and the filter/sump has been changed. It also has had the latest firmware update.
It sometimes makes a chirping noise when it goes into 4th.

Mine has a small bump 1-2 on light throttle if it's any consolation ( since day 1) but the rest doesn't sound right. Has it always done it or are these new symptoms? ZF gearbox specialist would probably be your best bet to diagnose it. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

That is not right for sure....I'd be seeking a ZF gearbox specialist too for a diagnosis....

It's done it, other than the noise, since I bought it 3 years ago.
My local ZF Pro centre changed the fluid when I first bought it. They are something to be desired as they didn't let it cool down before checking the level!
I've done it 3 more times properly.
I'm in contact with Stephens Engineering in Hertfordshire.
Although they are quite a distance from me they have a very impressive video on their website. They've quoted just over £5000 as a worst case scenario unless they can find some other cheaper fault that they can repair.
I've spent so much money on this car that it is now a keeper.
So can you guys just floor it from a stand still and it'll take off smoothly with no hesitation?

To be honest I've never 'floored it' from a standstill as it's not something I'd need nor think wise on a 11 yr old car with 160k miles on it but when I have pulled away 'briskly' it's perfectly smooth. The only 'gripes' I have with my box is the occasional 1-2 bump at light throttle and a tendency to hang onto the gears too long going up hills. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Jason ( and all the crew at Stephens Engineering ) are near to me - so the last 3 or 4 Range Rovers I have owned over the years have all gone to Stephens for full ZF service, cannot reccommend them highly enough, but they are a very busy workshop, so booking it in can take a few weeks sometimes.

I can floor my 2011 TDV8 4.4 Diesel and it's really very impressive from a standing start, nothing but real smooth, this is on a 180k miles vehicle !

I was gonna get it mapped, but don't really see the need to do it anymore, the ZF8 is very good when you push it, so I think you should get it looked at ASAP

These 8spd's are a common fit to a lot of BMW's and are well liked so may be worth doing some searches on BMW forums? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

You might want to also consider Bristol Transmissions or Dartford Transmissions and Autocare Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"
