2002 TD6 L322 Fuel Inject. System error

My 2002 TD6 L322 has an occasional issue which has occurred twice, both times in the following scenario:

- Less than a 1/4 tank of fuel.
- On a steep incline

The engine has become a bit lumpy at idle also.

My local Range Rover expert has suggested it needs 6 new fuel injectors; however, reading forums suggests to me that it might be the in-tank fuel pump.

I have an ODB2 scanner tool, so any information you can give me as to what to check before I go ahead with the rather expensive six new fuel injectors replacement would be most welcome.

might not be the cure, but I had a similar issue with mine on two occasions:

first: was a leaking pressure sensor on the end of the common rail

second: was the electrical connector to the above sensor wasn't quite fitting tight enough due to the little rubber gasket inside the plug being deformed.

might just be worth a look

The Fuel Inject. System error message is triggered by the sensor on top of the fuel filter, unplug it and you get the message. This sensor monitors fuel pressure so one of the two electric pumps are failing. low fuel in the tank when the message appears points at the in-tank pump. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Thanks

Thanks, both for your responses.

wayneg - would that also explain the lumpy idle, or do I likely have two problems?

I had the Fuel Inject System fault on my old MY05 TD6, it was the in-tank fuel pump that was failing. The main thing I experienced when the fault occurred was that the engine would just cut out and the Fault show up on the display. It only occurred when the tank was less than 1/2 Full, as the in-tank unit also transfers fuel in the tank over the 'saddle' in the tank to the sender unit I ran the car with a full tank of fuel until I managed to get hold of a BMW pump, that replaced the actual pump in the in-tank fuel sender unit. The pump itself cost £30 odd, whereas to get the full replacement sender unit is over £400 Shocked . It's not a difficult job to get the in-tank unit out, split it down and replace the pump. There's also a second fuel pump in the fuel line after the in-tank unit, it's possible that it's that one that is failing.
The lumpy idle could be just a faulty wiring loom from the ECU to the injectors. If a wire frays or breaks in the loom, the injector just stops working on that particular cylinder, giving a lumpy idle and loss of power.
I would investigate those fault scenarios first before looking to replace all six injectors.
Hope the above helps you. Thumbs Up

I would think 2 issues. A simple test would be to remove each injector plug one at a time whilst the engine is running, if the misfire gets worse you know that one is good, no change and that one is the issue. It could be the injector or loom, sometimes just wiggling the plug can fix a poor connection. One recon or salvage injector is an easyish DIY. Dont discount running an injector cleaner through the fuel, you might get lucky 2007 TDV8 VSE

Thanks everyone for your help. As you might not be surprised to hear, the 2002 TD6 isn’t a daily driver so have just got round to getting it sorted now the next weekend adventure is imminent.

It indeed was a single injector, stripped it down to the injectors and found the faulty one which was #4!

Replaced the injector with a reconditioned one and we are sorted. Have not experienced the hill and low fuel error so might have fixed also but we will see. Thanks again. 2002 L322 Vogue HSE

Hello,
You mention a BMW pump to replace the original in the in-tank pump. Do you have a reference for that please?
Many thanks
Andrew

The in tank pump can be swapped out with any similar generic one. You might have to modify the terminals. You will need some fuel hose as the original is hard plastic and is not reusable. When I did mine the whole unit was very expensive especially as I am in Australia. I think they are much cheaper now. Here is a link to the type of pump I used...
