might not be the cure, but I had a similar issue with mine on two occasions:

The Fuel Inject. System error message is triggered by the sensor on top of the fuel filter, unplug it and you get the message. This sensor monitors fuel pressure so one of the two electric pumps are failing. low fuel in the tank when the message appears points at the in-tank pump. 2007 TDV8 VSE

I had the Fuel Inject System fault on my old MY05 TD6, it was the in-tank fuel pump that was failing. The main thing I experienced when the fault occurred was that the engine would just cut out and the Fault show up on the display. It only occurred when the tank was less than 1/2 Full, as the in-tank unit also transfers fuel in the tank over the 'saddle' in the tank to the sender unit I ran the car with a full tank of fuel until I managed to get hold of a BMW pump, that replaced the actual pump in the in-tank fuel sender unit. The pump itself cost £30 odd, whereas to get the full replacement sender unit is over £400 . It's not a difficult job to get the in-tank unit out, split it down and replace the pump. There's also a second fuel pump in the fuel line after the in-tank unit, it's possible that it's that one that is failing.

I would think 2 issues. A simple test would be to remove each injector plug one at a time whilst the engine is running, if the misfire gets worse you know that one is good, no change and that one is the issue. It could be the injector or loom, sometimes just wiggling the plug can fix a poor connection. One recon or salvage injector is an easyish DIY. Dont discount running an injector cleaner through the fuel, you might get lucky 2007 TDV8 VSE 2003 TD6 gone. 2002 P38a gone 1999 P38a gone 1997 p38a gone 1993 VSE gone 1992 VSE gone 1966 Series 2a with V8 conversion gone |

Thanks everyone for your help. As you might not be surprised to hear, the 2002 TD6 isn’t a daily driver so have just got round to getting it sorted now the next weekend adventure is imminent.

The in tank pump can be swapped out with any similar generic one. You might have to modify the terminals. You will need some fuel hose as the original is hard plastic and is not reusable. When I did mine the whole unit was very expensive especially as I am in Australia. I think they are much cheaper now. Here is a link to the type of pump I used...
