L405 SDV8 life expectancy / reliability

I have a 2016 SDV8 Vogue which has 58k miles on it, has been utterly reliable and has only been (badly) serviced by LR twice. Used a v.good inde since.

I’m in a quandary as I now have a new replacement 460 but the 405 is so good that I hate to part with it. Our previous TDV8 lasted 10 years with almost zero problems.

Is there any info anywhere ref longer term reliability issues or would readers be able to offer me advice - good and bad - please? My intention would be to use it for occasional jaunts into Deep South of Ireland which are 1000miles return from northern Scotland.

Any advice welcome and gratefully received.

My 2016 MY VSE has 60K on it and like yours has been utterly reliable, no issues at all, just preventative maintenance done with a good local MD. I usually swap out of cars at 3-4 years, but I’m intending to keep this one a while longer because its such a good car. Keeping yours seems to be a no brainer to me.

I'd have kept the L405. Except now you've bought the L460, I'm not sure what the point would be..... why did you feel the need for the change & is that still true ?

When LR finally announced a decent electric range PHEV - the 460 - I just had to have one. The one I have isn’t the one I ordered but a cancelled car which for some reason I was offered at list. The one I ordered apparently arrives in Jan ‘24 so really don’t know what to do now !!! It’s also been upgraded to 550e and mucho dinero more.

The idea was to keep the SD as the shorter distance UK only car and the new one for our long journeys. LR made me sign a one year clause whereby I can’t sell the present 460 (a 440e HSE) until end of Jan ‘24 so there’s an option to sell. However the other half now loves it and selling it could cause a problem. 😎

One will have to go. Watch this space.

SDV8 isn't a great for short journeys only - depending on how you define short.....

Average life expectancy of a car in the uk is around 14 years / 200k.
I suspect you’ll be ok for a while!

2015 SDV8, 87000 miles, no issues.

If it doesn't make 200k I'll be miffed frankly.

If it does die then I'll be looking at a very late L405 in Byron Blue & Ivory to replace it.
Ideally another SDV8 or maybe an SC Petrol, but in anycase a FFRR should have a V8 in it.

I drove the L460 P350 with the straight six and it felt lovely...

...but V8.

I am a child.

My L405 V8 MY18 failed with 25000 miles. LR MD's couldn't get to the bottom of it miss firing. Can't fault LR warranty they spent a fortune on it. It eventually failed catastrophically and needed a new engine. LR no longer do the 4.4 V8 diesel, if they did they would have put a new engine in under warranty. 6 months of pain and JLR UK had to buy it because they couldn't fix it.

My L405 V6 3.0 didn't have one warranty job in 4 years, I really wish id kept it.

I have tried literally every other make and nothing compares to a RR.

My 2018 V8 diesel spun rod bearing after 42 k. miles and engine was toast. It was under warranty, but as replacement engines are not available its write off. Serviced as required by main dealer and mostly highway miles.

Mine was like new, can't believe they wrote it off. I'm not sure if we will ever see the 4.4 V8 produced again.

I can't find another example as good as what i had, I wish I had kept it and paid to have the engine rebuilt myself. I was quoted 17k for rebuild.

I got a good deal on a new X5 M50i which is loaded with lots of extras, comfort pack tec pac etc..

It's ok and sounds great, but its not a RR. I put a deposit on an SV then backed out as i had lost confidence in the brand.

Im probably going to sit it out and wait for the 460 4.4 AB which is same engine as my X5. They are dropping in price fast. ------------------------------------------

Funny that previous to L405 I did run Disco 4 and it was faultless for almoust 100 k. miles despite having V6 diesel engine.

After I lost my L405, also went with latest 3 l. diesel-hybrid X5. Its lighter, bit faster and has better handling, but doesn't provide sense of occasion like FFRR. I like new RR Sport, but not sure I want to go back to brand which is unable to support its products with spare parts.

I've had my 7 year old L405 SDV8 dealer bought for 2 years now and it had/has several faults in that time even though its supposed to be a low mileage 54k car.

It came with an oil leak and the oil cooler has been replaced.
The ancillary heater pump doesn't work and still doesn't work.
It came with very low refrigerant but I topped that off and it seems OK now.
It has a noise over bumps so I'm thinking the front drop links may be worn.
It occasionally goes into limp mode with air flow errors, new MAF sensors hasn't cured it.
The inlet side is heavily coked up which isn't unusual with these cars

Other than that, fantastic. I do prefer my old TDV8 L322 that I traded in for the L405, apart from the road tax.

Still going strong after 6 1/2 years. I’ll run it for many years yet 👍
