I need to replace a front disc but I can't remove the carrier bolts. Brand new 6 - point socket on a 24" breaker bar, with another 2ft of scaffolding pole. Slipping on the bolt head. Any suggestions how to get these out?

Maybe a bit of heat around the bolt …..I’m looking at doing mine this weekend

Impact wrench will loosen seized bolts more effectivley than brute torque load. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

It was only after buying my RR in 2019 did I soon discover that any tool in 3/8 form is worthless (snapped countless bits) and only 1/2 will stand the test of time. Also purchased a MAPP gas torch (much hotter flame than reg gas torch) and Plus Gas (dismantling fluid).

You can get plus gas from screw fix. Soak it in this and leave for a while and then get the torch on it. And good luck! 2007 Range Rover Vogue 3.6 TDV8

You could try using the weight of the car. Jack the front wheel up, take the wheel off, put your socket and breaker bar on the offending bolt with the end of the breaker bar on a piece of timber on the ground and then release the jack a couple of inches.
This will put a sustained load on the bolt that should crack it. Just leave it while you have a coffee or cut the grass or whatever.

Ok, have tried heat, soaking in fluid, prolonged tension on the bolt, all to no avail. The bolt head is now well rounded, so conventional methods wont work now I think. My options are, weld a socket to the bolt, the additional heat may help. Or grind the head off the bolt. This latter would entail removing the caliper, carrier and disc as one unit, then drilling out the remains of the bolts. does this sound feasible?

Think I'd take the whole hub off and take it to a lorry garage and ask them to use their 3/4inch rattle gun on it...  Pete

This is a shame but I do think you should have (and should) invested in a decent impact wrench and sockets. Another must for an L322. Impact wrenches work wonders at knocking stuck bolts un-done (although all of the above methods are also needed too).

There are some good cordless ones out there now with 1,000NM+.

There are also some very impressive cheap Chinese wheel hub guns knocking about such as the MPlus. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Must admit I agree with the above - I have a 3/8 Milwaukee stubby impact wrench and it’s been invaluable and with it being so small and powerful it can get behind discs/suspension arms/fiddly bits etc 2007 Range Rover Vogue 3.6 TDV8

Heat the head up with a gas torch so it's softens, hammer on a 1/2 socket that's slightly smaller (maybe imperial) and then run a fully charged impact driver on it. Bolts and nuts seized by corrosion need shock waves to break this bond and not torque load. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

As JayGee said . soften head, hammer on a slightly smaller impact socket, and try an impact gun.
Do not use a standard socket, as these can 'explode' when used with a large capacity impact gun, it's an easy way to blind yourself.

Then if that fails, Haylands suggestion would be my next step. IF that failed then the hub is already off for cutting the bolt head, then drilling out the stud in a machine shop or similar.

Had the same problem. Tried impact guns etc. Welded on 6 nuts but all broke off. My mate used an arc welder and disparate metal rods to weld a nut on. Big breaker bar and scaffold pole released the bolt. I was amazed that the threads in the caliper were intact.

No idea why the bolt was so tight, very little corrosion.

Best careful of the brake hoses especially when using an angle grinder to clean the bolt before welding.  2007 3.6 TDV8
