Hi,

L322 Westmister 68,000 miles 44 TDv8

Car due for a Service A. I have had to have open heart surgery so not had time to take the car in.

It was booked with am Independent just before I was rushed in.

Wife been running me to appointments and there is a light burning smell from the wheel arch, mainly the nearside on my RHD car.

Any suggestions welcome please?

Oil burning or electrical burning? Could be the O rings at the rear of the engine if it’s oily smell. Can’t help if it’s electrical.

Yeah. I think there is a how to somewhere. Not done them myself but if you take the air inlet box off under the windscreen with the bonnet open I believe you can get to them.

Failing that, it’s the oil cooler leaking oil into the V of the engine…. Check coolant has no oil in it, as the oil cooler uses water to cool it and when the seal goes or it warps, cross contamination occurs.

That’s another known issue.

Don’t forget that the fuel burning heater is under the near side wheel arch too, but prob not that as it’s probably too warm for it to come on.

Brake caliper sticking? Only Range Rovers since 1988

My initial thoughts are:

1. The FBH may have developed a fault and is running when it shouldn't be - when you can smell the oil, listen by the wheel arch to see if you can hear it running. If so, you can remove the fuse or bridge the fuel pump to it
2. The Indepenent (whatever work they did) left a little oil in the engine bay, and it's only just burning off, as the vehicle has been laid up
3. O-rings, o-rings, o-rings (and gaskets). If it's been laid up, oil has a habit of making its way to the other side of a seal
- oil feed hoses on the top of the back of the engine may be dripping oil down the back of the block (it then lands on the bell housing)
- oil cooler o-rings
- it may be trying to do a DPF regen
‐ rocker cover gaskets may be seeping a little

I think my first step would be to take it for a 20 mile drive on a motorway.

If you're able to get under the car, I'd look up to the rocker covers with a torch, and also at the bell housing. Otherwise I'd let the garage put it on a ramp and give it a quick inspection whilst you wait as a subsequent step. The smell tests;
'Acrid' - Brakes (very distinctive)
'Sweet' - FBH (diesel burning)
'Rich' - Engine Oil
'hot oven' - DPF regeneration 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

That’s another known issue.

Some folk have got away with just replacing the gasket in the cooler, but mine had warped so needed a new cooler. There is plenty of flushes to do on the coolant if it’s got oil in.
