I tried APlan for my last renewal, not only did they take two days to get back to me with a price, they quoted over £200 more than LV. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Current

We can't win them all as much as we'd like to Sad

Appreciate you trying us though, unlike standard insurers some specialist insurers do require referral, many come back to us quickly but some do take up to 48 hours if the underwriters are busy.

A Plan for me this year - Didn't realise the affiliation with the forum but already have my van insured with A Plan Thatcham so thought I'd get a quote for our FF and Volvo. All 3 vehicles now under A Plan's Markerstudy policy and a pleasant interaction with Jack yesterday. Price wise around the same as I'd been quoted elsewhere (insurance seems more expensive across the board this year) but far more personal interaction and a policy that allows for modifications so very happy.

You must be with Modified Van (a separate branch in Thatcham) due to your existing policy Smile as we don't have a Jack but they do!

We are specialist vehicle, also based in Thatcham but specialise in all things car Smile

Thanks for the feedback! Bizarrely we are in the same building but 2 different branches etc, all we share is a kitchen lol

Hi @A-Plan, I’ve just sent your Fareham office a request for a quote. I see you are the specialist group should I contact you or stick with the Fareham branch?

Also, please could you say if the free legal cover remains a valid benefit for forum members as that might just tip the balance your way.

Thanks! TDV8 4.4 2012

Hi!

Access to club schemes and club discount with insurers is only available through the Specialist centre which is us here in Thatcham, Fareham is one of our standard branches. Additional benefits with specialist is that our modified policies cover mods like for like and we have off-road use Smile 01635 874646 is us

Free Legal is not a club benefit and has never been advertised as such but the bespoke club schemes and club discount insurer options may get your price down anyway Wink

United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Santorini Black

I am slightly baffled by the response from A Plan Thatcham today. Basically, they said they were no longer insuring Land Rovers (and specifically my L322) as they are apparently the subject of significant theft rates. They said I was looking at an eye watering £2100 a year for cover. I am currently paying less than £500 with a different insurer.

If this is genuinely the case, might I suggest that A Plan may not be suitable for any forum members here, though I do hope this is not the case. Either way, I just don’t understand how a company that advertises ON THIS FORUM, and on their website specifically mentions 4x4 specialists including modified vehicles, can no longer insure us. Please, someone tell me this is not a mistake!!! Andy

Hi 👋

We're not advertising as such but are responsive and displaying our banner as an option for insurance as we do offer the bespoke club policies. But mostly we're here to help where we can. As an independent insurance broker we work with a panel of insurers and have different types of schemes for different types of vehicles/profiles and uses (off roading etc).
The theft issue surrounding Range Rovers (Jaguar Land Rover in general) is widely known amongst the owners' communities and insurers, unfortunately it's getting worse not better and as a result many insurers are stepping away from the market completely. Whilst this results in fewer options for owners/consumers, until JLR work harder to resolve the theft issues the premiums are likely to continue to rise.

We can still insure them but each insurer has set criteria and if that criteria isn't met (Postcode. Tracker, garage, etc) then they won't quote the risk profile unfortunately. Same as if you use a price comparison site many companies will quote, some don't, depending on the risk and the insurers appetite, unfortunately RRs are falling out of a lot of insurers appetite because of the increasing theft risk.

Sorry we couldn't help you this time Sad if you're paying less than 500 for a Range Rover in the current market that is a fantastic price, just check that it covers everything you need it for (some budget insurers for example exclude windscreen cover to get the quote down)

Interesting. I thought the issues with theft was due to the L405 having keyless entry, or have I missed something? Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Keyless entry is a target for theft across the board (highly recommend a Faraday pouch), some models of vehicles such as some mustangs for example have the option to disable the keyless entry completely, which as a lot of people do this means that fewer are successfully stollen as no signal can be obtained if that feature isn't switched on.

It's worth noting too that theft doesn't necessarily mean the whole car either, many vehicle models are higher targets for catalytic converters for example and theives aren't interested in taking the whole car.

Range Rovers and Land Rovers in particular are high risk for theft because they can fetch a hefty sum due to value and shifting them can be done so quickly, many end up overseas never to be seen again on stolen to order by organised crime groups.
Same with BMW X series vehicles at the moment - these are being targeted in our area at the moment (not mine because it's old and doesn't fit the "order" clearly as they hid behind mine to get my neighbours signal in an attempt to avoid the camera) A-Plan Insurance | Specialist Vehicle

Ok, given that the L322 doesn’t have keyless entry, why is it being singled out to not be covered? Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

It isn't being singled out, Land Rover as a whole are increasing theft targets in recent years. They've been in the top 10 most stolen for years, taking top spot last year according to statistics from confused.com and the DVLA, and landrover models take up 6 of the top 10 spots for most stolen car models. Stats shown in this article published in May:

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/05/2...%20stolen.

It's a real problem and security needs resolving or it will continue to cause issues with insurance premiums and limited provider options for owners in years to come Sad A-Plan Insurance | Specialist Vehicle

Do insurers track specific model year thefts? or just roll their risk profile into models eg. Defender or Range Rover?
Land Rover have done a lot to improve security particularly in the new defender and l460 Range Rover and sport. If they are not being stolen as much will insurance for them remain high because previous models are still being targeted? MY23 PHEV HSE

Surely as a specialised insurer who advertises and is a site sponsor on a JLR forum, would it not be worth having a specialised policy for forum members who are aware of the deficiencies of the product and take many steps, i.e. turning off the keyless entry and fitting trackers, using faraday pouches, etc, to avoid being a statistic.

A caveat that states the Range Rover will have all these things done should reduce the thefts to a more "normal" level.

Can't you come up with a policy that takes forum members enhanced knowledge and experience into account and offer a suitable policy at a competitive cost...

Giving your customer base a unique and affordable product would open the gates for obtaining or keeping customers, a win win for all...

Just a thought.... Pete

that would be a great idea Pete , something like a classic car type insurance..

i fear that a-plan are just brokers and not insurance underwriters who i believe are the ones who can do this kind of thing.. i could be wrong though? ... - .- -.
