Air con woes and error message.

Hi All,
Just had my air con re gassed and it worked for a little while although not at the same freezing level I seem to remember when I had the car at first. I took it back to the local garage, and they checked for leaks, and there don’t appear to be any. There’s still stacks of gas in it. However the compressor is not kicking in as needed. They put it on a code reader and got the following error message in the photo. I think it ends in “or ground”. First of all they don’t know where the sensor is located and understandably didn’t want to get too buried in Land Rover electronics ! They’ve recommended I go to a specialist. I thought I’d try here before going anywhere else! Be really grateful for any ideas. Thanks in advance, Si. FFRR 4.2SC/KTM 990SMT Current and cherished.

Sorry to bump this folks, but does anyone know where the cabin air con temp sensors are please? Not the ambient one just above the clock, but there must be left and right for the driver/passenger zone control? Really can’t face a trip to London with passengers and no air con!

Thank again in advance,

Si. FFRR 4.2SC/KTM 990SMT Current and cherished.

Si,

Does sound quite similar to my own experience.
I'd suggest the refrigerant control valve as a likely culprit - it's a commonly occurring problem.

Have a look at this thread - https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic43778...ed+air+con

The pressure control valve issue is widely known on the 4.4 TDV8 as linked, but not so much your engine.

That said, they are common culprits in any air conditioning system on any car. My symptoms were:
- air con would work well sometimes
- a burst of acceleration over 2,300 RPM fired the air con into life
- lots of idling traffic / slow speed and no air con

Plenty of gas in the system. When Halfords tested it, they confirmed loads on the high side and none on the low side confirming my PCV (the test was free).

I'd also used the GAP tool and the cabin temperature sensors were working fine - so may be something you're able to do. If you're getting a temperature reading from the sensors, then neither are open loop.

You could also have a faulty clutch on the a/c compressor.

You could also have a blocked condensate pipe, although you'd probably expect to see the compressor running.

For me, Halfords vacuumed out the gas for free, I changed the air con compressor for a new one and then got Halfords to recharge for me and all has been well since. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Thanks for the response, much appreciated. Think I’d still like to check on the temp sensors though as that’s what the error message is saying. Reading through that thread it looks like Ross at Grenlands sounds a good bet for proper diagnosis too. Not a million miles from me as I’m in Dorset. Still like to know where those damned temp sensors are! Rolling with laughter FFRR 4.2SC/KTM 990SMT Current and cherished.

Thanks Gary, much appreciated. It doesn’t seem that my compressor is even spinning up at all so I wonder if it’s a sensor before all of that. Complicated stuff air con! Very Happy FFRR 4.2SC/KTM 990SMT Current and cherished.

If you get someone with the proper diagnostics or GAP tool (i have a GAP tool and live in Southampton - would need another member to confirm if the tool can be used to see live values on other cars without unlocking), they'll be able to see the live values for your cabin temperature sensors, evaporator temperature to confirm the system is getting cold enough, and that your compressor clutch is functioning. They may also be able to obtain some more insightful fault code detail. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

thanks Gary, I’ll look into that. I’m a big fan of starting with the cheapest/simplest first, so getting a solid pointed seems the logical way! FFRR 4.2SC/KTM 990SMT Current and cherished.
