If you cannot return the faulty unit and get your money back ? then it could be worth opening it up to see why it is faulty, it could be something simple, plus 'some' used compressors could only require an overhaul kit which saves money.
No insults intended, but are the garage correct about a 'new' unit being faulty ? Did they make a mistake, just thinking about different possibilities.
As for the old compressor, if when opened up it 'appears' to be in good order you could overhaul the unit cheaply and easyily especially if it is already out of the car. That then leaves you with more money to buy other parts
