Autoglass Windscreen Replacement - Anyone else used them?

Was driving back from Cornwall the other evening and something hit the windscreen which made a fairly big chip that then started to spider out with cracks by the time I got home.

I'm insured through Elephant, I rang there 24hr glass helpline on Sat, they rang me today to advise they have the glass in stock from LR, heated, tinted and with the rain sensor. They will be fitting it on Tuesday....

Has anyone had experience with Autoglass in the past? I'm concerned I'll get wind noise or broken trim etc.

Apart from that I'm really looking forward to having a new screen, my old one is so pitted (120,000 miles) it destroys wipers after a couple of months.

Autoglass Guildford replaced the heated screen on my Disco 3 last year. I drove to Norwich the following day, only to have the new screen crack from top to bottom. 'Shocked' They claimed I had another stone chip, I inspected the screen and attributed to fitting error, (the damage was right under the rubber trim) - they would not have it, so I lost another £70 excess. They also damaged some trim, which they replaced at their cost.

The second screen was fine for the remaining 6 months I had the car. Conclusion - be wary. 2018 Range Rover Autobiography

Thanks guys, I'm guessing it totally depends on the fitter that installs the glass.

I'll report back tomorrow after its fitted!

Can you not get the dealer to do it? I had a BMW a few years ago and I needed a side glass. I asked for a BMW one instead of a pattern one. Insurance Co said I could have it done at the dealer if I wanted to. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

I had Autoglass out a few months back to fix 3 stone chips, 2 on the Mrs car, one on mine. I was chatting to him and in his professional opinion its always better to fix than replace a screen, as he said "it never goes back in as they did at the factory".

Well, they fitted the screen today. I was very pleased with their work and professionalism. They covered the seats and carpets so not to mark them. Removed all trim pieced with care and didn't break anything. They replaced the black trim pieces either side of the windscreen on the door pillars too.

I used to have a woosh noise at around 70mph, its now super silent and after some fast driving in the pouring rain tonight I can confirm that there are no leaks.

Also it's a pleasure to look through a lovely un-pitted windscreen, there is much less dazzle at night when wet now.

Autoglass are billing my Ins' company £350 for the screen, I didn't think that was a bad price I have to pay £70 of that. Interestingly my fitter said one of my existing repairs was starting to crack again and said when you have a heated screen its generally best to replace....

Anyway, I can't speak for other fitters, but the Bristol branch seem to know what they are doing and I was pleased with the results.

You can't repair a heated screen as we found out a few years ago when we had a Fiesta. We had a starburst in the screen and we got a glass company out to it. The chip turned into a crack and we ended up replacing the screen. Autoglass replaced it and the fitter told me that repairs to heated screens are not recommended as the elements break 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Whilst on the subject of glass- how does the rain sensor work? I can't get my wipers to come on automatically when it gets wet. Does it have to be activated at the dealer? I can only assume a previous owner has had it de-activated. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

It's the original heated screen. I assume the sensor is the section around the mirror? 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

A stone put a fair old chip (with a starburst effect) in my windscreen in July but luckily it was very close to the bottom of the heater element (mind you, no ice yet to test the affected area). The hole was around 3/4mm spreading to around 6mm within the laminate, but Autoglass used their system to fill it again. It took them around 20mins and on checking the windscreen , I could hardly spot the repair - all I could see was what appeared to be a very small dirty mark (bit bigger than a sharp pencil tip).
Strangely, I was initially told by LR insurance to take it to my LR dealer to repair/replace (due to the airbags / mirrors etc I assumed) but they said all they would do was bring Autoglass onsite and did not do it theirselves. I subsequenlty spoke to LR again who then gave me the option to go direct to Autoglass. LR insurance told me that main dealers would be doing windscreens in future and that maybe mine had not been brought online yet. This surprised me as I use Stratstone who are a nationwide dealership and would have thought they would have been one of the first on board if this was true. Stratstone said they knew nothing at all about this.
Cheers
