Ramps

I am trying to decide if I need some ramps or not, I am getting fed up of wheeling out a trolley jack and rolling about on he floor to locate it and then line up axle stands.

I have read as many posts as I can find on ramps but I still have questions

A wide range of costs here but I wonder how much lift do I need?
I need them to be useable for any car but our MG might be a problem and may need an extension ramp.
So how much lift do I need for a universal ramp?

I am in Australia but am sure there will be 2nd hand steel ramps on Facebook Market / ebay etc for very little in the UK. I work on several low cars and use 1mt lengths of scaffold planks to make the rise shallow enough. With the Range Rover, it's a doddle, I do put it in low range for more control, gives the hi/low a workout too.

I am a big fan of using car ramps, but for a slightly different reason.
My drive is not level, but the ramps soon solve that problem, making it easy to level up the car for oil changes etc.
It also gives loads of room to get safely under the car, rear end , or front by reversing up the drive then driving the front wheels up the ramps.
Being plastic they are very light and totally maintenance free, yet still strong enough to safely lift the car.

Make your own. Always found commercially available ramps too narrow. I know it’s stating the obvious but never found ramps particularly useful as you are very limited as to what you can do with them as anything that involves removing wheels is not possible. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

The plastic ramps are VERY wide compared to most.
My tyres are 255 55 20 and comfortably sit on the ramps with no overhang.
To remove the wheels is also easy using my “sprinter” bottle Jack stood on suitably high wooden blocks.

Scotland 2012 Range Rover Westminster TDV8 Orkney Grey

I bought some hefty (400x400x300mm) blocks of wood and can raise the vehicle up by 700mm in a few mins. A decent trolley jack helps, of course. Whistle

It only takes me two lifts with the jack - one at the front, on the sump guard, and one on the middle of the tow-bar at the rear. Blocks underneath and hey presto!

 The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

England 2007 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.2 SC V8 Zermatt Silver

I welded up some ramp extensions, the octy vrs is very low at the front so the attack angle
has to be very shallow and they seem to work ok with fatty. The end height is about 1 foot.

Mine live in the garage with a car on top of them, they are heavy but I can drag them in and out fairly easily I wouldn't say it takes me any longer than dragging out Jacks and axle stands etc. Sold - Bell a 2015 MY16 Loire Blue Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Thanks all, lots of info.

One of my main questions was how much lift do I need?

I am leaning towards building my own with sleeper sized timber, but I will make them wider than 9" like the plastic ramps some of you use.

If you're thinking of making your own, here's the guide I wrote:

Made from 9x2 C24 timber. Super heavy duty and cheap to make. The timber fits the tyre well, and are just as safe for use on inclines/declines. Plastic and metal are typically only recommended for level ground, due to the torsional forces that result from uneven ground.

If I did it again, I'd reduce the steps by 5cm in length, and add a fifth step (easily added at any point) 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
