If you look at the cost of taxing a typical saloon over £40k you will pay circa £570 with the premium till they are seven years old…..so “only” a £120 premium!

Feel it a bit. I returned from living full time in France 18 months ago. In 2017 when I took my 2008 3,6 Tdv8 over there it cost me just over €900 to register in Fŕance. That was it. No annual payment and MoT equivalent every 2 years.

Oh and diesel was cheaper.

The system is now different for newer vehicles.

No complaints but still a bit hefty, especially when one compares the state of the roads here against those over there.

I totally agree with you, if it was added to fuel, tourists and lorries etc would be paying some tax, people that drive more miles would be paying more and people with bigger engines would also pay more. FWIW I also feel that electric cars and hybrids should pay rad tax along with everyone else.

I wonder how government income via motoring figures would change if they were based on a more honest calculation of an individuals road usage ?

It costs me nearly £700 per year to use the roads for about 3 hours every month so work out how much I am responsible for tarmac wear compared to others.

At least most insurance companies appear to take into account annual mileage, to a small degree , when calculating your annual cover cost. RR owner

aka cash cow club, with varying degrees of severity, it seems that times are a changing and not for the better. As for the newest rip off scheme that I heard of - Higher charges to park, basically pay more if you have a bigger / older engine

During my last local elections when speaking to one hopeful candidate, I suggested a discount on road tax for re-cycling an old car like mine, as running it for a few more years uses a very small amount of energy against the vast amount of energy used to build a new car, mining for ores, using crude oil for the vast amount of plastics in new cars etc. As for EV;s, AFAIK there is not one dedicated facility to re-cycle old EV car batteries in the UK. Currently I can actually sell my old car batteries to a scrap yard, methinks that quite soon there could be a huge charge levied to anyone wanting to get rid of a scrap EV battery pack. Funny, said candidate did not even want to talk about these issues, seems the candidate had been taking lessons from Gruppenfuhrers Khan and Drakeford
