Whilst I can’t really add any constructive help I think it is accepted that the best ride is with 20” wheels as a thicker tyre wall obviously helps smooth high frequency shakes. If steering sharpness is required then obviously 21” or 22” will be more to your taste.
The 20” wheels are also narrower so less prone to tram lining. These smaller wheels can be picked up pretty cheaply so maybe more suitable for you.
I used to have a BMW 760i and that was definitely more “wafty” than my Range Rovers, seemed to just glide around in its own bubble of comfort. Whilst my Range rovers have never matched this I still find them smooth, comfy and refined but it’s all a spectrum I guess and partly subjective too. My current FFRR is on 20” wheels and am I happy with the ride and although aesthetically maybe the bigger wheels look nicer I rank comfort over style so the 20’s are staying. 2013 SDV8 4.4 Vogue SE Aintree

I personally definitely wouldn't go to any larger wheel than mentioned could have been an option if there was a style I liked and I hadn't just spent £470 odd on 2 new tyres.

Its all a matter of opinion as I imagine I wouldn't be able to cope with 23s on...

Just struggling to believe that this is suppost to be how an l405 is.. if I'd just bought a brand new one and it was like this it would be going straight back for refund.

Couple of questions for you CaymanBlack out of interest if it's not too much trouble...

Given you have 23 inch wheels I expect if the issues I have are normal to the l405 you might be able to notice them on yours?

1. At 30-35mph and above a constant feeling of the road surface being transmitted through the car. (Body, pedals, seats and steering wheel)

2. Passenger seat visibly shakes/trembles above 40 mph. Especially noticeable at motorway speed 70mph

3. Power steering heavier on the first cold start of the day, better later on in the day but not always guaranteed.

4. No consistency in the drive... can get in and drive for a bit, park up and nip into the shop come back out and now the ride might be harder or the steering heavier it doesn't drive the same every time

I'm even more confused now as that suggests I have issues but Haylands thought my car drove okay and I thought his was similar.

Not in a harsh way as you describe. But in mine, I would say that I feel the road through the whole car. It feels lighter and tighter to me than the L322 to drive, and as a result I do think I feel the bumps more than before. Even with the big soft tyres I have at the moment.

Cant say I've noticed the steering feel change from trip to trip. The steering is heavier than a modern saloon car like a focus or pug 308 though.

As per #3. Mine feels consistent.



** This comment though ... tremble at speed like that you feel through the car would have me looking at the wheels. You're describing exactly what I was feeling before I changed my wheels. Admittedly I knew that my tyres were wildly out of balance due to uneven wear, but it manifested in a tremble you could feel at 30mph and higher. Wasn't all out shaking, but would make water in a bottle ripple. I know that you've had them off, balanced etc etc etc. but are they fitting correctly flush?

The mating surface between the wheel and the disc on the hub and centre spigot needs to be very clean and free of any debris at all.

Is it possible that there is something on one of the mating surfaces of the wheel, the disc face, the area around the centre spigot that is preventing a wheel from fitting perfectly flush ?

I've found so far the L405 wheels to be a very tight fit onto the hubs compared to my previous cars, and that there was a lot of white corrosion build up around the centre spigot which I had to scrape away

It might me that although when you put the wheel on it feels like its fully home, but in reality a small something is preventing it from being just perfectly sat on the hub. This would put the wheel out of alignment to the direction of tracel and make it shoogle ... but wouldn't show up on a wheel balance machine. V8 or else ...

When I had the wheels and tyres road force balanced I watched the 2 technicians do a great job of cleaning up the hub faces and spigots as well as the mating face on the wheel. I was really impressed by the attention to detail, care and pride they took in their work

I had a thought whilst I was out today.
With the inconsistent ride in mind… This happened after the compressor was replaced.

The compressor should not have any impact in ride quality, however have they knocked something during that work? The L322 has an accelerometer in the spare wheel well which is where the compressor is. If you L405 is no different then defo check that accelerometer is correctly fitted, and there are no signs of knocks or damage to its wiring? If slightly out could it be on the cusp of reading in such a way that the suspension is stiffening? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Good thought FFRR, the accelerometer isn't mounted in the spare wheel well from what I can see compared to the 322.

Everything looks to be fitted correctly back there and I checked my letter I wrote to the JLR tech when the car went in and I'd noted before hand the ride was firmer than expected...

At the minute it's acting just like my previous 2 L322s. I must be cursing these Range Rovers
