So looking back, I see you were getting error codes, one being U0001-81.

The Google-fu results would suggest that this is an ABS / can bus error, but this site

https://www.landroverwhiteplains.com/servi...-codes.htm

Returns that U0001 as a wheel speed sensor. Now if that were the case, then it wouldn’t surprise me that when the car was driving and it had an error from a wheel, such as loss of signal or pulse from wheel speed sensor, it would think that the wheel had stopped momentarily, or that one wheel was spinning waaay faster than the other.

To me, I would imagine that if the brakes were applied during this loss of signal, it would think the wheel had locked up, it would activate the ABS sensor until the wheel showed it was spinning again.

Conversely, if you were accelerating and opposing wheels suddenly seem to be going at largely different rates, it might think that the a wheel has lost traction… in which case it’ll back off the power till the wheel regains traction. Now this might only happen for a fraction of second but it would be enough to make the engine feel down on power.

Once DSC is kicked in, I’ve no doubt it will also kick in steering controls and what not. V8 or else ...

Marianna hope the comparison helped you, very kind of you to help Haylands Thumbs Up

Noticed you had an official looking observer in attendance, was that your security or was he making sure you were both behaving yourselves and refraining from 'Italian style' road testing Rolling with laughter

Thanks again to Haylands for today, really interesting!

So a back to back comparison was made with both of us driving each others cars and they both drove very similarly.

Pete was happy with the way mine drove/rode and steered.

As I mentioned to him, this morning the ride was pretty much rock solid but I'd jacked it up and fitted the spare in place of the wheel with the high road force variation (the one reading 110 newtons)

Just to test a theory however I did swap it back before heading up to meet Pete. The car was better on the way up there and with them both being similar I'd say that's the best it can get.

So on this one it's down to me to decide if I can get used to it or if I have to move it on and look for something else to get the soft ride and light steering I desire Thumbs Up

OK my 2p worth....

First off ride quality is very subjective....

I do think that the later, post 2010 Range Rovers, be they 322 or 405 have too much faffing from JLR, they respond to drivers saying the car leans too much through the bends....

It's not a sportscar yet a lot of people think it is... If they had left them alone and not introduced first CVD then active anti roll bars to stop the lean and tighten them up in corners they would all ride much better and have more of a magic carpet ride...

Putting so much emphasis on reducing roll just leads to firmer suspension, then chuck on some 21 to 24 inch wheels and you have just about ruined the ride....

Fatty Offroader had "normal" shocks and anti roll bars along with 18 inch wheels and a huge 5 inch plus sidewall...

It was the most comfortable Fatty going but did roll in corners, although the suspension set up did mean that bump steer was minimal..

The other thing (and remember these are all my views not fact) is that these heavy cars have a huge amount of unsprung weight and this has a negative effect on ride... 275+ width tyres promote tramlining as well..

I'm a big fan of use it or lose it and mine gets an Italian tune up regularly as well as driving over "gentle" sleeping policemen at a decent speed to work the suspension, I find it keeps the fatty supple and helps in the ride department.

IMHO MarianaWestminster's fatty drives as it should do, it is very similar to mine in all aspects, we spoke at great length about perception and pre determined expectations.

I think the expectation of the 405 is that it will be a limo quality ride due to the cost but there is no way anyone could design a car that is a limo on road yet still climb a mountain or ford a stream (sic)

In my view the 405 is superb, far and away the best all round car I have driven and the important part there is "all round" it's not a sports ca, it's not a limo, it's a huge technological conundrum that does far more than it should...

I love it, I hope others learn to share the view... Pete

255/55R20 highway not all-terrain tyres should make the steering lighter and the ride a little softer so perhaps have a drive of one with such tyres.

Driving home last night (50 miles) things were pretty good and I thought to myself this is just about liveable.

I have 8 really short sharp speedbumps on the road to my house and it was actually tolerable over those last night.

Come this morning were crashing all over the place again, those same 8 speedbumps were far harsher.

Steering was also heavier (it always is on first start of the day, when cold) which Haylands said his doesn't exhibit.

The ride is never consistent, if it was always like it was on my drive home last night then maybe I could tolerate it.

Just wanted to say after driving Haylands car I do believe this is how they should ride but I also cannot believe this is how they are suppost to be Laughing

Think it might just be me Cayman and my perception... Haylands thought my car drove fine and having met him he's a stand up gentleman and I trust his opinion 100%

Perhaps I am just expecting too much?

Try a fishing scale to measure how much force it takes to turn the wheel when it's cold or hot, should give an idea of any discrepancies.... Thumbs Up Pete

I’m with Haylands a little on the ride quality and that it’s been too heavily biased towards stiffening up and roll control at the expense of plushness.

I just fitted 255/60/20 wheels and tires to mine having come from 275/40/22. Where I previously had thoughts about how the 22” setup transmitted a lot of the bumps through to the cabin, the bigger fatter tyres have hugely, and i mean hugely smoothed the ride, quietened the interior and made it feel the plush waft along that i think you feel it ought to be for a car of that type. So much so, my wife got in and immediately noticed just how much better the car was as a place to be.

Don’t get me wrong, the 22” setup drove fine, could handle bumps and pot holes fine, but the 20” is night and day plusher. Where a bump in the road might make a 22” setup go ‘dunt’ when hit, the 20” goes a softer ‘doof’. I think the L405 was designed as a 20” setup primarily.

Steering … possibly a pressure / temp thing? I had a mini which had the largest factory size 17” alloys and a tyre profile probably similar to the 21/22” setups of the L405. If the tyre pressure was low by not much, the steering was markedly heavier than when it had some more air in it. I know that you said you run your tyres as low as you can get away with … could it be that youre slightly under inflated, and when cold, they dont flex and resist the steering, and that after a bit of a run, the tyres warm up and become more supple, and allow the steering to be lighter? Maybe by putting a bit more in, the steering will return to the way you feel it should from cold. ( admittedly, that will make the ride a bit harsher possibly )

I find the steering the L405 to be medium light … it’s definitely notably lighter than my 640d’s steering. V8 or else ...

Fisha,

Great to hear of the improvement in going to a 60 profile on 20 inch.

I wish I hadn't just bought 2 new tyres and I could find a set of 20s I liked on the 405 as I would consider it.

For me personally they just don't look right on any less than a 21 inch but that's just me.
Laughing

As for steering, I'm back at factory pressures for 16MY which is 34 front and 37 rear.

My steering and Haylands steering is similar but not as light as what I see in this video below, perhaps there are different steering tunes for different markets?

I'm between a rock and a hard place now as this 405 and my last 2 322s have failed to recapture the adoration I had for my 2009 Westminster.

If I try to live with it I know I'll spend the whole time looking for and spending money on problems that may not actually exist but if I sold it I don't know what I would replace it with as I can only see my self driving British.
