Yup - you had about 150 to 200kg in the back doing making a larger suspended mass of the car (basically nearing 10% additional mass ) so more reluctance for the body to react/move with bumps, instead putting more movement demand on the suspension, and more damping effort to accommodate the additional movement.

I.e. the body monocoque would travel smoother, and the suspension move more.

That’s my idea anyway. V8 or else ...

Good theory Fisha but I'm not sure where the extra 100-200kg comes from.

Only me and my partner in the car on the way there and the way back.

Only food items consumed by both of us was a milkshake and a brownie each (don't suppose that would add much weight haha)

Then just the 2 of us on the way back.

Only difference would be less fuel on the way back as we'd used some getting there so I imagine the car was lighter

If you have tyre pressure monitoring then you could compare the ride when the tyres are cold and when they're warm as a few degree rise can make quite a difference.

You said you had friends in, I assumed they were in for the 2nd journey. V8 or else ...

My mistake Fisha, I should have said they were in their own car

I mentioned in one my previous posts in this thread that the passenger seat trembles.

I managed to rig something up and record it.

Any other thoughts on this?

The ride was quite hard this morning, I know it wasn't like this when I bought it however
i've felt the same way about my last 2 x L322s (Lots of posts on here accordingly)

It definitely doesn't feel floaty which is how all the video reviews on youtube describe it.

I'm desperate to figure this out as this is the most cash I've ever spent on buying a car.

(I was never able to improve the 2 x L322s Crying or Very sad )

Also my little thing with manually raising to normal height... never gave different results after the first time so I'm just letting it raise when I drive off.

Almost feels like I've lost 50% of the ride quality since purchase.

How many miles has it done..? Are the shocks still original and past their best..??

I know when I changed the rear shocks on two past owned 322's it made a massive difference and I didn't think it was too bad to start with...

Just thinking out loud... Thumbs Up Pete

Original shocks I believe.

Could it be the way I drive? (Which is genuinely like miss daisy)

Don't understand how I can have had 3 RRs (2xl322s and this 405) be fine to begin with then feel hard/harsh after the honeymoon period.

Ive been watching this thread for a little while waiting for someone to come up with an “ah ha” moment!

Alas, still nothing Sad

I feel for you MarinaWestminster as my L322 also has the harsh and jittery ride you describe on your L405 and L322’s.

Personally I cannot see how the compressor change would make a difference as that simply brings the tank up to its pressure which is higher than the air bags (which is why it can raise quickly). However, was there something else done that you are not aware of? Or any other mechanical issues that their work (and generic tests?) might have aggravated? It has been suggested that the valves could be an issue too… and that a replacement may have helped? Something to do with the air being able to freely move from one side to the other possibly…

Today I had the car jacked up for various reasons, resulting in the suspension needing to be re-told which height it should be at (it thinks it was in extended mode, and a heigh button press corrects all heights). I took some bits to the local dump and found the ride harsher than usual!

I have often wondered if these issues are related to the height sensors as it has been mentioned many times about changing height seems to start or resolve the issues for some - they could be coincidental, but is mentioned often.

In addition to these height “issues”, I also swapped my front tyres with my rears, and lowered the pressures. I would expect the lower pressures to soften the ride, however an unbalanced wheel being relocated could cause problems if the earlier balancing statements are indeed true. I’m going to book in for a road force balance and geometry check in the next few weeks too, as I have had the car realigned after suspension work, but a full geometry check seems a sensible step too.

Your comment about driving style lingers for me. I have given it a little thought in the past too as our gearboxes adjust to suit our driving styles, so why not the suspension too? Tighten everything up if the car thinks we are going to throw the car around corners…
Now, I am not suggesting you “drive like you stole it”… but is there a sensor or reading that is off? That is presenting as if there are sudden changes which are interpreted as enthusiastic?
The L322 height sensors have two sets of outputs, so a theory there could be that the sensor for height is correct, but the one used for the suspension is jittery?
We would not notice the erratic height changes as they are slower to respond (10mm tolerance i believe), nor directly notice the suspension changes except for a stiffer ride.
This is all speculation and theory, and not applicable to the L405 (from what I have read elsewhere) but might trigger a thought in someone…

I appreciate that none of this will help you, so leave you with one suggestion… even if just to make us feel better that we tried something…

Check that your height sensors are freely moving where they attach to the suspension arm. My rears had rusted causing them to not move. This would give incorrect suspension arm height readings (and ride height changes may free them briefly) Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Hi Ffrr-lover,

I recall your posts on this topic in other threads including some of my own.

I agree regards the new compressor, I too cannot see how that could cause issue but I suppose the dealer could of disturbed something but truth be told I was feeling the harsher ride whilst the car had the 'normal height only' fault but I just put it down to the fault.

It's true what you say about jacking up and changing the suspension heights etc. The suspension has no consistency, every trip it behaves differently.

I do remember reading on landymansams thread about a height sensor being found to be faulty but I don't think replacing it was the cure all.

I definitely think it must be something about me as a person these cars are getting upset with! Rolling with laughter

All were fine when I bought them but quickly i've become frustrated with the ride especially having spent 3x as much money on an L405 thinking this was the cure to my harsh riding facelift 322s.

I do literally drive like miss daisy trying to be as smooth and careful as possible because like most of us here I have had to work really hard to have the car.

On my last 322 I did remove and lubricate all the height sensor linkages and I too found the rear ones rusted and stiff however doing all this never made any difference.

Booked in for a road force balance tomorrow so will see if anything changes.

In theory if it is unbalanced wheels (I have had new tyres on the front since purchase plus have motorway vibration, see video of my passenger seat a page back) throwing off the CVD operation then the road force should sort everything out, no?

I think we are close to the point of saying it’s us and the car is actually fine Laughing

I really hope the balancing etc does help as we are running out of options. I am frustrated that out IIDTools cannot give all of the CVD readings to help diagnose these issues. Our next port of call is a specialist willing to spend the time (and us the £££) to get to the bottom of this.

Best of luck tomorrow Thumbs Up Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Had the road force balance done today.

Front 2 wheels with the new tyres I had put on a couple weeks ago came back OK on the road force but still slightly out of balance.

One rear wheel/tyre was marginally close to the limit but the n/s/r was measuring in at 145 newton's of road force.

The limit is 100 on the machine so the tyre bead was broken and the tyre rotated on the rim which brought the road force down to 110 newton's.

Still slightly out of limit but they suggested as the tyre has 7-8mm tread to see how I go.

I’m glad you are happy with the results of the reduced vibration. I’m surprised they cannot counter balance that wheel mind… but I am no expert!

I wonder what’s next on the list of things to check… Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8
