A rust trap on your L405 you probably aren't aware of....

Go grab a torch.
Open both tailgates, and lift the little carpet flap thingy up from the lower tailgate, -handy if you have something to keep it up out of the way. (I used to have 2 rusty bolts in there until I replaced them with painted ones, but that's not what I'm talking about)
Switch the torch on, and take a look inside the square hole on the left (passenger) side of the car.
You will see a perforated steel grille in there, -not sure what it does, but it's probably rusty!

Thanks JLR, something else to worry about..... “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

It's a plastic tailgate so they had to put some ferrous metal in there somewhere, and of course, leave it untreated.... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Pete

Thank God I have a “poverty spec” car, without roof drains or Dynamic Response corrosion to worry about, although my crankshaft is forged from high-density carotene, of course (yawn) Rolling Eyes
Said perforated steel bit isn’t in the lower tailgate itself, it’s in the bodyshell in front of the rear bumper, probs something to do with HVAC? I haven’t a clue, but my MY2017 has light surface rust in there already, and being perforated metal with a large surface area to volume ratio, older vehicles could be badly affected. I’ve sprayed some ACF50 in there for now. Crying or Very sad “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

May be not a rust trap, but if you want even more paranoia, pull out your front inner wing liners and check out the amount of leafs and stuff in there.

Oooooh, I love a bit of FFRR paranoia! The great thing with us paranoia-obsessed types is there is always something else to worry about you weren’t aware of, they just keep giving! Laughing
Out with family today so that one will have to wait Shocked Laughing

I have a vision of lots of FFRR owners up & down the country, trying to remember “now, where did I put that bl**dy torch?” Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Same here. I've just been out to mine to check. I can't see any rectangular holes back into the body :-s

I have two galvanised bolts, each have a few spots of surface rust on them but by no means require replacement. Maybe a spray with some protection or a quick paint with some touch up paint to keep them looking good.

Can you take some pics of the place you are talking about Gremlin? Kev

Its been mentioned before, there's nothing really to stop (unless you park your car in a garage and only take it out in summer) leaves from near the bonnet hinge from dropping down inside the wing in the void between the wing and the body, the foam doesn't really do much.

Ah, sorry guys, I’ll try to take a picture, but big day tomorrow its the annual 4K service!

The hole is about 50mm square, and is readily visible on my MY 2017 model, the mesh is on a bulkhead maybe 60-70mm behind that, you will not see it without a strong torch in daylight, its pitch black in there! “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?
