drop the engine or work in situ ?

My TDV8 is using coolant and a head gasket leak has been confirmed. It did overheat badly beforehand, so a warped head is suspected. Whilst I am in that area, I plan to replace both turbos at 150k miles. I have a two-post lift. What is the recommended approach - to drop the engine and transmission complete on their subframes by supporting them at ground level and lifting the body off, or remove the heads and turbos in situ ? Advice from somebody who had done a body lift would be very much appreciated.

We always used to drop the powertrain & front subframe as a unit from below the body, leaving the body on the two-poster, I suppose you could do it the other way but we had the benefit of the mandated 'special tool' so we'd never do it any other way....

You have me intrigued. Tell me more about this mandated special tool. Not come across this before.

If you have a 2 post why wouldn't you do it that way? Gives an opportunity to clean up the subframe and do any other necessary work that's hard to access with the powertrain in place. 2012 (L322) 4.4TDV8 Vogue SE, RSE, Fuji White over Arabica.

It's just a hydraulic platform with support arms and location pins to hold the subframe and power train in the correct orientation for removal & refit operations, probably similar to the assembly line tooling but adjustable. You could probably do similar with a few axle stands, wooden blocks and ratchet straps to support everything whilst you lift the body. Make sure you strap the body to the lift as the balance will change with the power train unbolted....

Thanks for that. It is going to be axle stands etc, so the tip about securing the body to the lift is very much appreciated.
