Respray

At the weekend I purchased my first classic. It’s a 93 built and 94 registered V8 from the Coventry factory.

I drove it home 70 miles and it drove really well. It’s pretty solid and the engine and gearbox are great.

The paint is pretty rough, so I am thinking of a respray. It’s got stacks of history and is a factory original with proof.

Do you know approx how much a respray would cost and if I changed the colour, would it greatly affect the originality?
It’s currently Portofino red, but I would like to change it to Ardennes.

Thanks

Best guess would be £2-3k if staying same colour, £3-4k if colour change.

Yes changing colour will affect originality and value.

My view is only change the colour if its a really unpopular colour OR you will keep it for a long time in which case make it how you want it.

The only way to get any idea is to get a quote from someone who has seen it and understands exactly what you want, a respray means many different things to different people.
Are you talking about a cheap (ish) coat of paint to tidy it up? how bad is the current paint? how much prep will it need?. If you want to change the colour how far are you willing to go? will this be a bare shell strip? (personally I think anything less will never look right).
These are big cars that need a lot of time and paint, a decent job will likely run into many thousands and a cheap job will likely look like a cheap job.

I’m really not a fan of red, but maybe because it’s very faded and scabby.
I would be keen to see what a good example of red looks like.

That looks a lot darker than mine.
Here is a pic of it a few years back, from a distance.

They did other shades of red over the years, but mine was 100% definitely Portofino Red.
Sorry I can’t remember the other red names, but I agree yours doesn’t look anything like the colour of my 1989/ 90 version.

Its weird, I've just had a look at some old colour charts, they did a Trocadero Red (Met) and Portofino Red (Solid), Trocadero looks closer to Mikes car but isn't, Portofino looks closer to the OP's car and Ardennes Green on the colour chart looks nothing like it, my LSE's is Ardennes Green.

I'd have a good look at the car first, it may be that you start off with a waft over, but it then becomes a full colour change and that's a pain to do properly, rear windows out, prep, isolating coat, paint and lacquer.

I had a quote of £2.5k assuming I stripped down the car (taking off lights trims grilles bumper etc - all very easy to do).

That price included prepping back and primer.

I had a go DIY and have orange peel. I'll probably have another go this Summer and get the garage temperature and humidity right.

Why not have a go yourself? The only challenging panel is the bonnet. If you don't change the colour do you need to do the roof? 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus
