Worth getting a good auto electrician to look at it, could be the tailgate control module gone awol, but it could equally be something else as simple as corrosion or a loose connection. No point in trying to guess.

Did it fail exactly when the battery was changed ?

Hi it failed before the battery change. Gremlin 500- the connections are tight |

Do you have a cheap DTC scanner? example below, but check its OK for your MY and model etc
