When travelling down a local country lane, when the camber of the road changes, where the road dips at one side, it's making a noise at the rear O/S wheel. My local indy was unable to identify it and while at the local MD nothing was falgged on their health check.

I'm not very technical, but I'm beginning to wonder, could this intermittent noise be caused by a brake shield catching against the disc?

I can't see any evidence of rubbing, but it's not easy to inspect.

The brake shields tend to rust through where they bolt on then come unfastened and rattle about. That doesn’t sound like a rattle so I’d try what’s been mentioned already… handbrake shoes etc…..

I've had a look Oggy but I can't really tell, and to be honest, I'm not really sure what I'm looking for.

I haven't tried reverse yet, as I need to drive somewhere where the road surface changes, but what I can say, is that it only makes this noise when the road surface dips / has some subsidence. It's slightly worse with a combination of uneven surface and when cornering occurs but fine driving normally on a level surface.

Thanks MJ Dronfield - I'd say definitely not a rattle, more an intermittent scraping sound.

Besides checking things mentioned in above posts, the sound could also be a bent / loose heat shield or section of exhaust, jack it up and have a look when inspecting the brakes etc.

Firstly Stan, thanks for your question, oddly, no it doesn't seem to make the noise when in reverse. However, I don't know if this could be linked or not, but I did notice yesterday when reversing down hill on my driveway that the brakes squeaked, something it doesn't do at all while moving forward. I don't know if all this suggests anything or not?

Thank you also to Merchy, oggy and mjdronfield for your suggestions, the general consensus seems to be that it's either brake shoes or something catching. I'll get these all checked out

I had the same - I stuck my hands through the wheels and pushed the brake shield back a bit - quite hard to do and depends on style of wheels/size of hands! Seems to have worked.

I do need to replace my brake shields as they hold the park brake shoes - it is so corroded it isn’t holding the pins for the shoes themselves. Does look like a pig of a job.
