United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Santorini Black
4.2 v8 supercharged metal lumps in oil

Hi
I thought my first posts would be about restoring a 4.2 sc to its former glory unfortunately it’s not!
So long story short brought a sc few weeks back to use as my daily, other cars are a 2013 defender 110 utility and 1986 90 soft top . Basically plan was to buy a cheap sc with few problems but mechanically good to daily and restore whilst keeping the miles off my defender.
So purchase the car 100 mile trip home all good runs lovely few electric issues and wear and tear that needs addressing but on the whole happy put 200 plus miles on her all good but on Friday I do a oil change and in the bottom of the pan is bits of metal maybe 8 and one good size piece about the size of a 5p ! Censored ! But fill her up and it runs sweet no knock no rattles! Done 60 plus miles today and it’s sweet gave it a proper run pushed through the gears and revs and it’s perfect!

Not sure what to do just carry on and hope for the best ! It was cheap so not really worth rebuilding

Although possibly pointless, did you take a pic of the 5 pence sized piece? Whilst it is still running OK for now, it sounds like very bad news, as a marine engineer finding that would give me the heebie jeebies. All depends upon the overall condition of the vehicle. The least I would want to do is drop the sump pan to have a good look, I don't know how difficult / easy it is on yours. Or drop the oil in another few hundred miles and see it there are more bits.

Last thought, Sell fast, but not to a member on here Whistle

Does sound like the block, just keep your fingers crossed and do the oil change again later. Know what you mean about selling, I could not do that either.

just a thought could the timing chains and tensioners have been changed and it is parts of the tensioners or pieces of the tensioners that have gone in the sump pan? my first move would be to drop the sump and see if any bits are left just for peace of mind and any history of this being done on the paperwork. or a way to look at it do the chains and tensioners need doing? new vehicle purchase

Good thought oggy ! What ever has failed it’s not effecting the car at the moment engine sounds and runs sweet ! Hopefully tensioner and previous repair never cleared it all out .

Anyone ever dropped a sump on a SC ? Easy to do on the ground ? Gasket needed Or sealant gasket ?

Cheers

it is easy to say to someone drop the sump but it is not looking a very easy job probably the reason why it was left and not removed. when you drop the oil again try and get a magnet through the sump drain plug and see if you can pick up any more from the bottom of the sump pan .or see if anyone has an endoscope camera you could borrow to have a look new vehicle purchase

Just found you can get a magnetic sump plug , will purchase one drop the oil again this week see what’s in there then put the magnetic one in for a month then drop oil again , unless it goes bang or develops a knock or rattle

that is sounding a good idea. you could always flush the sump pan out if you put a tube over the dipstick tube with a couple of jubilee clips with a good flow of red diesel to flush it out or put say 6 litrs in the sump and then undo the plug see what comes out . new vehicle purchase

Quick update, dropped oil again 2 weeks ago only a few minor flecks of metal came out , I’ve done nearly 1000 miles since then with no problems! I’m starting to think it was the tensioner that broke up and the mechanic who changed it was very lazy and didn’t clean up properly or maybe didn’t realise few bit had made it into the sump ! Will drop oil again in 2 weeks but think it may of dodge a bullet there Thumbs Up

If the lumps of metal in the sump were important it’d not be running as well as it is IMO.

Dropping the sump from the 4.2SC is a big job, it either requires removing the engine from the car or dropping the subframe from the car so you can access the sump. Either way, it’s not a fun job.

The timing chain tensioners on the 4.2 are cast aluminium with plastic guides mounted to them.

If it were mine and I’d done 1000 miles in it with no issues then I’d not be too worried, especially if you got it for a good price.
