3 data sim not supported

I picked my car up a couple of weeks ago (2018MY AB) and want to get as much functionality as I can, I bought a data only sim from amazon but the car says the sim is not supported. I don't have any other devices with a micro sim to try it in that and I rang 3 who wanted me to top the card up, even though I have enough data on it already for the two years I plan to keep the car.

Any ideas as to whether it is a sim or car issue or any advice as to what to check?

The car connects to my phone fine on BT and is connected to my house WiFi if that helps. First time FFRR owner

This probably isn't much help but my 3 data SIM worked fine out the packet without any activation etc. It said 12 months but actually lasted 2 years before it cut off. Second one installed in December was the same.

Where did you get the SIM from?

Only other thing I thought of was that I spent days trying to work out why my new one wouldn't work and it was because I'd put it in the wrong orientation - it felt like it had clicked in but it was the wrong way around. I don't think it said "Not supported" though, I think it just had the 'no signal' symbol on the touchscreen top left corner. FFRR SDV8 Autobiography

Find someone who can test the data sim in their phone.
I have a 3 data sim and no issues, I vaguely remember I needed to do that before I fitted the sim to vehicle. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

Thanks for your replies, I think it is in the correct way, contacts towards the fronton the car and the notch uppermost.

I've scoured the house and don't have any old devices with a micro sim, I've just got off the support chat with three and they are sending me another Sim on the same number. I bought it from amazon on the 24gb for 2 years deal. First time FFRR owner

Hopefully the replacement will work. I've had 2 in mine (12 month and now 24 month) and did have the same issue with the first one, but taking it out and carefully inserting it (used some tweezers) did the trick. The second one was fine.

I didn't have to put either in a phone to activate. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

Hi Arch,

Excuse me sounding a bit dumb/ obvious, but I had similar issues with a 3 data sim in my laptop, no connection whatsoever.
Turns out there was no 3 network coverage in my (home) area whatsoever, although 3 denied it, saying there was 4G cover. When I took the laptop to another town, it connected immediately.

Just in case, -sometimes we overlook the obvious……….. Whistle â€śIf it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

No offence taken there Gremlin, that is always a good start point to go back to very basics. Unfortunately I went with 3 as my mobile is with them and I get 5g coverage and the ca is saying SIM not supported, rather than no signal.

My plan is to go to the local 3 shop and see if they can test the SIM(s), if they are OK the problem is with the car First time FFRR owner

I don’t think a 5g SiM will work in the LR and I think all new 3 Sims are 5g capable 4.2 SC - sold , now bought back

I'm not sure the SIM (subscriber identity module) has any bearing upon the speed of the carrier other than being enabled or not for various connectivity types, they should all fall back to (ultimately) 2G if higher speeds are not available.
It does sound like the SIM needs activating or PIN removing before it can be used in the car. most SIM's come with a few spacers - for want of a better word, to allow them to be used in various iterations of SIM holder or reader. Can you not take the spacers off to reduce it to the size needed for your phone to initiate it and if necessary, remove the PIN?

Update,

I took the SIM into the local 3 shop, they confirmed the sim was ready to go, no activation needed, I put it back not the car and the car still says 'sim not supported'

I've also been sent a free GiffGaff sim with a view to loading it up with data if it worked, put it in the car and the car says 'sim not supported'.

Does this point to the SIM module being duff? First time FFRR owner

Have you tried either sim in another device? - despite what the teenagers in 3 say, I think it does at least need to connect to a network to initialise first.

yeah they connected it to a phone in the shop and used it.

I'll try again though in another device here if you think it may work. First time FFRR owner

Well if its been initialised in a phone, then it should work OK. Can you see any DTC's set?
