Multi storey woe

Saturday night took my wife into Nottingham for her birthday took the Rangey, forgot which car I was driving and went into Fletcher Gate Multi Storey car park. Spotted the height restriction at 195cm not a problem…..

Went through the barrier and tried to lower the height off….”ding” air suspension inactive! Who says cars don’t have a sense of humour!

Went to leave, meanwhile 8 cars queued up behind so tentatively went in….1960s design meant that it was close to a 2 point turn on each ramp entrance and exit to avoid hitting the curb. This was ok until my wife opened the sunroof visor to see how close we were….. Confused

Gradually made it up to the 10th floor, tried for the 11th to be stopped by someone coming down….sure enough it was about 3cm lower than all the other beams! Had to reverse down the slope and get the cars behind to back up…found a space and abandoned it for the night! Following morning same trauma getting out. Most stressful driving experience for quite some time.

This is all topped off with the Infiniti FX grinding to a halt on Monday night, suspected crankshaft sensor failure, Renault Sport Clio leaking more oil in 2 weeks than my old Landy did in 5yrs!

Cars you’ve got to love them! Think they’re all on strike. L322 TD6 2003

I feel your pain, I used to park there to go to Iberico / the Cock & Hoop quite a bit and it's a stressful experience.

If you want a real challenge next time try Upper Parliament Street, I have never been so nervous driving the RR! Sold - Bell a 2015 MY16 Loire Blue Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I remember similar woes in Wolverhampton’’s 60’s made multi storeys. Made the city centre a no go as all the car parks were the same. Just not FFRR compatible. Just an extra reason to move elsewhere.

As a child, I always thought the multi storey car parks at The Mander Centre in Wolverhampton were massive - our family’s VW “Bay Window” fitted easily. Many years later I had reason to visit Wolverhampton and went to park the Rangey in the same car park. Oh dear….. the ramps were as wide as the car, so scuffed wheels and tyres all round!

Sad

Heartfelt commiserations.

My wife’s previous vehicle was a very nice black babyRR HSE with very dark powder-coated metal-flake gunmetal 20” alloys, and I strongly advised her to avoid the local Debenhams multi-storey in Sunderland with legendary 8” metal-clad kerbs on the skinny ramps…. Shocked
But thus, I say unto you, the Wise One was ignored, and the mighty alloys perished and were ground asunder, and their rims turned unto dust….. well, sorry for being a bit Biblical, but as prophesised, it involved all FOUR wheels on the same day and a £250 bill later changed her parking habits permanently. (and probably saved me a fortune Rolling with laughter )

Fast-food Drive-ins are a similar risk for FFRR’s, there must be a tale or two about those to be told on here…… Big Cry “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

The only tale about a drive through I have is as follows;

Once in my youth I needed a cheap motorway car, so in my wisdom bought a Citroen Xantia estate (a wonderfully misnamed Temptation 2 special edition) that loooked a lot like a hearse, this was to replace a rusted out Escort I’d had as my first car. Anyway this car turned out to be a complete lemon, power steering worked turning to the left but not the right which was fun.

One day I took it to a drive through on a Saturday lunch with some friends, ordered ….no problem, first speed bump no problem, paid no problem, then there was a bong as it lowered itself off and wouldn’t come back up! At this point I realised I was now stuck between 2 speed bumps and had no hope of getting out!

Two hours later a nice AA man managed to get it raised enough to scrape itself out.

I never really believe in lucky and unlucky cars….but this was an unlucky car! 1 year later it was written off twice in a day. First it had a tree felled on top of it whilst I was driving it. Insurers and police told me to drive it to a local repair yard 2 miles away with them escorting me, 1 mile down the road someone drive into the back of it at 30mins as they’d been texting on their phone. The best seats of any car I’ve owned, in the worst car I’ve ever owned. L322 TD6 2003

Crept up to a height bar at the entrance to a car park in a Daihatsu Fourtrex a good few years ago. My mate looks out of passenger window and says- you're clear. Collect ticket then proceed to smash the first 2 fluorescent lights we encounter !

@DaveK:

I saw something similar at Queens Hotel, York many years ago, when a chap arrived in his brand new shiny black Mitsubishi pickup complete with full roofrack. He gently approached the low roofline, and seeing the front of his roof clear the leading edge, he floored it into the car park, not realising that, although his front wheels were going down the quite steep inramp, the rear wheels were still going up the entrance bump: LOUD “CRUNCH!” and vehicle firmly wedged between roof and ground.

I saw this because I was on foot, returning to the Hotel after parking in a public car park nearby, because the hotel car park was already full Whistle

The moral of the tale is clearly “look before you leap”

I didn’t stick around to see if he had the sense to let the tyres down etc, just legged it into the Hotel for a smug beer Rolling with laughter “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?
