Water ingress into the boot

As the above says, so I put a new satnav Ariel in the shark's fin awhile ago, I sealed it plus sealed the bolt heads ect, I also sealed the boot seal with a seam of gutter sealant. It still let's water in the boot, so having done some more exploring I found wet patches under the roof lining, above the passenger rear door area. I've read that water leaks can come from the roof rack area, and the sunroof drains.

How do I go about checking, or sealing/repair these areas?

Do I have to take the roof lining out? Big Cry

Thanks for any advice. Borrowed Grey 2002 3d 204k for a year

Also, check the pipe for the rear washer/wiper.

So just to clarify, the water only comes in when it's raining or when I use a watering can to replicate the rain. So if I pour the water on the roof above the rear passenger door and let it run off, it appears at the bottom passenger side, where the passenger rear corner panel joins the boot floor. I've looked in the audio area, there doesn't appear any water ingress. The sound proofing is dry, the floor area underneath the amp ect seems dry. I've taken the rear pillar cover/speaker cover off and again no water. I've taken the exterior black plastic cover off and cutter sealed the plastic grommets. I've tried to seal the side of the rear quarter window where it sits inside the plastic trim. I've also added some sealant to the top window trim. I can't see any leak coming from the rear wash wipe.
When I get a day off I'm going to check the rear water drains in the sunroof, via a funnel and water bottle.

Any other areas people think I should check please feel free to list

Could it be as simple as the tailgate body seal, they tend to get compressed in certain areas and can allow water to track into the boot area.

Also, if you have a tow bar fitted, water can access the boot via the mounting bolt holes if not sealed correctly.

So I seem to have had some success regarding the water ingress, although I'd prefer a couple of heavy downpours before I feel confident that the issue is solved.
I bought a tube of black gutter seal from Screwfix, took the seal completely off the boot, cut a little off the spout rather than use it as supplied to get a little more sealant in the gap. I chaced the sealant all the way round the seal paying attention to the more splayed out areas around the "corner's". I refitted the seal, and any over spill that seeped out, I ran back into the outer edge of the seal thus trying to stop any water tracking into the metal grip. Borrowed Grey 2002 3d 204k for a year

Thanks for the info, mine has just started leaking into the boot on the passenger side, so a few things for me to check there.

My experience was that the LH sunroof drain pipe had partially disconnected from the rear of the sunroof.

The water was trickling to the back of the vehicle above the headlining and then coming down the rear pillar trims (that hold the speakers) where it would then drip on the electronics in the side cubby.

The drain pipe was refitted by releasing the side and rear of the headlining, by rolling back the rubber trims after removing the grab handle and dog guard fixtures in the roof, and carefully gaining access - without creasing it - pushing the pipe back onto the spigot and cable tying it in place.

I also found an empty 5 litre plastic can and cut the top and one side out to make a water shield that fitted over the stack of components in that cubby hole. A simple task that is well worth doing "just in case".

does anyone know if the main boot seal has a common fail area or could it be at any point? I also have water in the boot, my lower tailgate carpet is sometimes damp. I havent had time to do the full tests yet as I keep her garaged it hasnt been a high priority but it has to get fixed. Current yokes

My 2004 Old girl is also letting water into the right hand cubicle in the boot (see Photos) - it's not the sunroof as that's covered and the roof lining and area around the wiper is dry and doesn't seem to be letting water in. I will look at the tail gate seal rubber to see if that stops water ingress.

Hi James,

I put a new tailgate seal in today (Duckworths £136 including VAT delivered). The old seal looked fine when fitted but the underside was compromised. Make sure you get the join at the bottom centered and there are two re-inforced parts where the lower tailgate closes, which you can feel (but not see). There is mastic already inside. It is a simple job and a pain in the n*ts at the same time.

Look up here (green arrow) and see if the bottom black padding of the internal D Pillar trim is wet.
You can also see this if you remove the internal D pillar trim and check the foam that sits below the speaker (but getting it back on is a faff.)

Best, Matt

Hijacking this thread a little

I too have a water problem in the boot - but it’s just the carpet and spare wheel well the electrics in the cabinet on the left side are perfectly dry. Seal looks ok but maybe I should replace it anyway just to be safe?
