Petrol. Fuel costs will be similar on short journeys / commuting traffic, in winter, the petrol will warm up quicker, even without a FBH. The interior and drivetrain is pretty much the same, only the engine differs, the petrol is what you expect it to be, the diesel is better than you expect *but* needs to be driven to stop it choking itself.

The AJ petrol is the Jaguar 4.4 petrol engine, not the BMW unit. Think it was fitted for a year or 18 months around 2005 if I remember right. The engine choice then went to 4.2 Supercharged and 3.6 TDV8 afterwards.

So it’s a lot rarer than the BMW unit.

The later cars will also have the updated interior and dash. Be aware that the early dash with touchscreen is much harder to update the stereo and phone than the BMW based non touchscreen cars, but given the age of the cars, if that’s an issue, you will probably be replacing it all anyway…

IMHO you should get a 3.6TDV8 if it's in your budget, they are a leap ahead than the earlier ones, good power and decent economy.... you do lose the earlier BMW seats which were more comfy than anything since but if you've never sat in an early one it won't matter.... Thumbs Up

Thanks Pete, I see from your profile you've owned an early 2002 Petrol V8. Was that your first FFRR?

Yes, it ended up heavily modified though... click on the green bit below my signature... same colour inside and out as the one pcourtney is selling.

Whichever you chose they do not like sitting around not doing much, they need to be driven and used... Thumbs Up Pete

Thanks I think the only one I’ve known of for sale with that engine is a RR sport, not seen one in the FF version yet

Thanks I’ll have a look. Yes it will definitely be used daily but just for shorter local journeys mainly.

I agree with all the comments so far to be honest…. Though it may pay you to drive a Petrol and a diesel and decide from there…. You may be doing short journeys normally, but if you find you really fancy the diesel you could do a few more longer runs to warm it up a bit and give it a good run, and the cheaper fuel bills compared to petrol may allow you to do this and it still be cheaper than having the petrol without the long runs… if that makes any sense….?

I don’t do loads of miles in mine, but I make sure it gets a good run now and again.

I’m not sure of the road tax cost differences, if that sways things…..

As Haylands says, you will have more choice with the diesels to get your ideal trim and colour combo etc as they sold many more diesels.

Thumbs Up

You could be right! I may well end up doing more mileage purely for the enjoyment of driving it.
I’d be interested to know what the diesel owners pay in tax. Whatever I go for ideally the lower tax bracket will help day to day running costs at least.

If fuel costs are a thought, get a piece of paper & work out 3k miles at 20mpg for the petrol & 28mpg for the 3.6 diesel & see what the difference is, bear in mind that up here at least, diesel is 25ppl more expensive than petrol, that’s £1.13 a blinking gallon more expensive than petrol.
In your scenario I would err on the side of a nice well sorted 4.2 supercharged that’s been very well looked after.

The AJ engines 4.4L (Non Supercharged) Started in 2005 - As they were the 2006 model year upgrade & are totally different to the BMW engined variant. Different H/lamps, Gearbox, Interior etc.

Unfortunately they are getting quite rare now.

Also £360 Road tax.

So just done a quick calculation using costs at my local Tesco… petrol 150.9 a litre, diesel at 173.9 a litre, using 3000 miles and 20 mpg against 28…..

Petrol RR £1029
Diesel RR £845.15

Obviously the more miles you do, the difference is greater… but it’s not a massive difference and differing road tax costs may easily shift that….

Looks like the road tax on the early petrol cars is £360, but if you go after 2005 everything seems to be £630….

a way to find out the tax on the range rover is to find what you are looking for on autotrader and then look at the 'running costs'.

the car tax is quoted along with the official mpg.. ... - .- -.

I pay £360 road tax on my 2004 Petrol V8 BMW engine car

NB lower road tax is possible using any car that has 225g/km CO2 or higher, as long as it's been registered before 23 March 2006 - whether it's the BMW V8 or the AJ Engine V8

so as long as the V5 document states registered before 23/03/06

That's good to know.

Pcourtney, please would you let me know when you are coming up to being ready to sell yours. I'm not sure if you received my pm but would definitely like to discuss it with you. Thanks
