I get around 24 mixed local driving with trips up to 10-15 miles but including a lot of quite short trips when it barely gets warm. On a long run say 250 miles mostly motorway at steady 70ish with the usual variations I get around 30. However if I travel at nearer 80 that drops to around 27. Previously a 2008MY Tonga Green Vogue SE 3.6 TDV8

Mine varies, depending on the road. After a 280 mile round trip down the M11 to London and back I'm currently sitting at 32mpg, but if i do my usual daily drive from home to J26 of the M25 and back I get (traffic permitting) up to 39mpg.

Admittedly, I only achieve this thanks to setting the cruise control at 60 and letting Classic FM soothe my way.

I used to get 30 mpg out of my 3.6 on a regular run from Cornwall to Manchester. Since having it mapped and the EGR’s deleted out and also running it on Shell v-power diesel it returned 36.1 on the same trip this week. The map only increased the BHP marginally but the torque went up to 550nm so the pull is awesome. I’m conscious of the fact though that the increase in torque takes the gearbox close to its limits so never really boot hard from a stand still.

Found this thread while searching for comments on the 3.6’s mpg, in the short time I have had it mine seems to do 22-25 on short journeys and 28-32 on longer ones - I divide the onboard mpg figure by 100 then times by 93 to offset the calculation as it has been mentioned to me that it’s around 7% off.

I know terrain, traffic, temperature and my right foot all play their part along with the condition of the engine itself but I concur that Classic fm has a positive effect on mpg!

One question I do have… on a long motorway run is it more economical using cruise control than keeping a steady speed manually with the odd bit of lift and coast? Guessing the cruise is programmed to use as minimal throttle as possible to keep the speed consistent.

From my limited long run experience I thought it perhaps kicked down earlier on hills than it would have had I been driving, but that maybe just my mind playing tricks on me… 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

I would say that cruise control is bad for mpg as it accelerates quite harshly to retain it’s set speed. It helps to stop your speed drifting up (I use it on the M25 for that) but the best economy is a light foot.

Good to know thanks. I tend only to use it when I’m feeling lazy or need to stick to an average speed. Obviously I didn’t buy this car with economy in mind but getting the best mpg is a game I like to play from time to time… 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

I ran a 3.6 for over a decade from new until it was at 160k miles. Real life average consumption was never much more than 25 and more realistically nearer to 22mpg.

To be fair, I never drove with slippers on.... Whistle

My e34 does about 28-30mpg and my wife’s diesel Civic does 45-50 so there was room for a V8 in the mix, I just pick my battles when choosing which one to drive. Going in the L322 always feeling like an event, an event with heated seats which is a blessing at the min… 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

Competed my first long’ish run over Christmas. Home to a village in Suffolk and back using standard diesel (mix of Esso and BP). Around 140 miles which at a guess was 20% urban, 20% countryside, 30% A-roads, 30% motorway.

With full load in the car and no more than 70mph max speed I got 29.6mpg according to the car, so let’s say 27.5mpg in reality. Guessing this is what would be expected? Also guess in warmer weather with a less weight it would have been over 30mpg.

Or should I expect to see more mpg than I got? 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

To be honest anything above 25mpg is a bonus as before I bought it I thought that would be my average, even on a longer run. Just want to make sure it’s running as well as it can for a car of this mileage. Surprised to read some of the high 30’s mpg some owners are getting on longer runs (without remaps etc). 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

I’ll get low and mid 30s on a long run in mine. Day to day use I’m getting between 19 to 20. Living in a hilly area with lots of short journeys and stopping starting.

That sounds about right to me, I've had 3 different 3.6 TDV8s and done well over 100k miles in them, full tank to full tank I've never seen more than about 25 or less than 20. If you want to play the mileage game you can fiddle the onboard readout with a GAP IID tool. I set one with false wheel/Tyre sizes then reset the computer when the engine was warm at the start of a long very gentle trip - 42mpg after 200 miles but filling the tank gave 26mpg for the full tank.
It was useful to convince the wife that another Range Rover wasn't a stupid idea.
Can't comment directly on remaps as I've never had one but the principle of getting more power and using less fuel at the same time just seems like a contradiction and if it was that easy I'm pretty sure the manufacturers would have done it.

Seems like it is normal to have quite a big mpg window like I have experienced in my short ownership then.

Short journeys without getting to full temp for long, hills, traffic or all of the fore-mentioned I now expect 19-23.

Long journeys with mostly main roads fully loaded 27 to 30.

A long motorway trip 32-35.

My second onboard mpg that I have not reset in my ownership I guess is the long term number, which is sitting at 27mpg which makes sense as the previous owner lived in Notts but had a second home in Deven. 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

MPG watching only serves the purpose of being a warning sign if something was wrong. If you want good mpg buy another car Thumbs Up 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
