Is it too cold to change my alternator?

I need to change my alternator, and the new one has arrived.

Tomorrow its going be between 0 and -2 all day, light wind.

I am not bothered about me getting cold, I can just come in and warm up with tea, but am I going to break something on the car as its cold?

I am thinking about the coolant bottle that needs to come off and/or the pipes and clips that attaches it and the plastic socket that plugs into the back of the alternator.

Thanks!?

Good plan. I will use the RR to go to the post office to collect the alternator 👍

ooh, the irony..
i changed mine yesterday, tdv8 4.4...it was ok. i had to use workshop gloves, as tools were so cold. a real faff to get the fan cowl out, as a few bits underneath have to be released.... but it came at a good time. as i have a small break on one of the belt pulleys... so thats a job to do next, whilst its all open and apart. so a car set were ordered. and, i have a new air con compressor waiting to go on, which i couldn't face doing a few months back, when it was too HOT.
alternator went bad literally outside my house.... just been on a short errand, and got home, only for car to start bonging.. and 'gearbox fault, suspension fault, active dynamics'...etc all coming up.... and then SMOKE FROM THE ENGINE. -engine off, still smoking... which i realised was a full short across the alternator, a slight panic as i contemplated what to do next...and luckily i had a 10mm spanner to hand, to quickly disconnect the battery, which the negative terminal wire was getting quite hot. after watching a few youtube, and mostly the 'sams motor and machine' one... he had exactly same symptom, and drama.
its in, around 4 hours work for me...and tomorrow i go for the air con compressor fitment, and then the pulleys, if they turn up today...
i always leave a cheap 10mm spanner on the vent shelf at rear of engine, as on my old car i had to often disconnect the battery, as when it got low, it would start alarming, and always happened in middle of the night. so disconnecting it in my dressing gown was necessary. that 10mm spanner might have saved part of my loom, and the battery.
i was always thinking of the brittleness of plastic parts as i was undoing parts, and setting them aside etc. i know how easy it is to break something, just as you finish, and the job turns bad. i'm aware of the top water hose spur pipes that are very vulnerable, and general brittleness of my ageing engine. it was plus 2 degrees all day. came indoors as light was poor, and the football was on.

original LR alternator was 150 delivered next day.

I did struggle, as the locking tab didnt seem to release it. but I sort of dug it out by prising it tiny bit each side ...carefully. offering up the unit after, I held it with the top bolt loose, and then the front lower, and then the rear lower, whish was a pain to thread but got them all in. that's where progress stopped. got battery temp connected so I could lock the car for the night. all ok.

my outgoing one, is original, and got to 208 thousand. it shorted out for no apparent reason, at idling speed after a short warm up previous journey. the fan cowl and fan comes out, and its wise to do the belt and pulleys at same time, and im using opportunity to do the AC compressor at same time. 6 months ago, I had to do the water pump, (slow leak) which involved fan and cowl off! that was quite easy, once revealed. you use two provided holes to wind a 10mm bolt into, which contacts the timing cover, and pulls the pump out of the cover parallel fashion. . otherwise, you cant prise it out. theres not a lot of working room on these engines. so many pipes and plastic bits.

Water pump, belts and pulleys and AC compressor already done. Nearing 150k miles so thinking the alternator is living on borrowed time although the mechanic says it's fine last time I asked about preventative replacement. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Mine lasted until 115000, rectifier packed up, bearings were perfectly fine and plenty meat left on the brushes....

Thank you all Bow down

Job is finished. Mine is a 4.2 so slightly different I think to the diesel procedure. (No fan or shroud removal for example)

I just kept squeezing and rocking the connector and out it came eventually, and I now have very sore fingers!

Lots of dismantling jobs before actually getting to the alternator. getting the thing out was a bit of a trial, but actually more to do with doing it one handed because of access, it being quite heavy and not being very strong in my wrists.

Good news is the high pitched engine related whine is gone. All seems to working Ok, 14.7 on the IID.

Cheers
