FFRR Self Deploying SIDE STEPS Report post

Guys

2 of our FFRR's the side steps are looking a bit sorry - The cars are L405's

Has anyone ever tried that BLACK STUFF thats got pieces on plastic metal in the paint - its the stuff you see on URBAN Truck Compnay London

The top of the side steps is wearing a bit thin in places

Rather than just taking them off and getting them stove enamelling in Black

There must be a more long term solution thats heard wearing


whats do you recommend

The only stuff I have seen is what they use in Australia on the tubs of the utes which is sprayed on and called ` Rhino`protection

Lookup "TANK" 2-pack epoxy Bedliner paint on eBay, not full of bits of anything, smooth satin finish just like the original, but much tougher then Hammerite, or probably what was on there before. Prep is king, so bead blast down to bare smooth metal, acid etch spray primer 2-3 coats rubbing down lightly between coats, then a couple of light coats of primer before applying 2 coats of the Berliner coat, give it a week to cure hard before installing. It's a Summer job unless you have a heated paint shop.

As a quick bodge to get you to the warmer weather, smooth black hammerite brushed on after masking the shiny bits will keep the worst at bay & buy some time. If it's too cold you wil get brush marks!  “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

JLR changed the steps to plastic instead of painted aluminium in later models just incase you didn’t know? 👍

What I meant was, if members keep an eye out on selling platforms? Maybe they will find later type steps on offer? That way they can simply swap them over and have the newer type of step that will never degrade again…

Swapping for the later ones is fine, but only if you can remove the originals.
I simply could not get mine to budge after taking all four bolts out, any tips on doing that?

I think refinishing with an epoxy type paint will work OK, but given the abrasion over time, solid plastic makes sense. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Take the Allen head bolts out and tap the underside in an upwards motion with a rubber mallet… Always come off for me sir… Use a bigger hammer?

Thanks Craig, I was bashing outwards with a very large rubber mallet, maybe try a change of direction next time, no amount of PLUS-GAS made any difference. Bashing upwards is MUCH easier when you have a vehicle lift!

They simply drop in from the top sir… Maybe that’s your mistake? Bashing them outwards won’t work… Try removing the bolts then tapping them upwards sir

or, put FF in offroad mode, stick a piece of wood under the step and then lower FF...

Trust me Stan, the OP just needs to give them a knock with a mallet (in the correct orientation!) to remove them… Applying near 3 tonne of force to cast aluminium brackets sounds a bit scetchy to me sir 😬😳🥴
