Hitachi compressor exhaust valve silencer missing

L322 4.2 S/C MY2006 102,000km.

Out of curiosity I had a look at the compressor in the spare wheel well and discovered that the sintered brass silencer was missing from the exhaust valve. I have read through a few threads here that explain how they become clogged and can cause problems with lowering the vehicle, and see that they can be replaced cheaply, or cleaned, or modified by drilling a hole.

My suspension seems to be running perfectly OK. The compressor looks shiny and brand new (though the air lines show manufacture dates of 2006). So I guess the cover keeps it well protected and clean.

Is it something I should replace? Does its absence create any problems? Should the dessicant in the drying chamber be replaced? (I read that the dessicant breaks down to dust and that can block the silencer).

Or is it something that I just ignore?

If people drill a hole in it to help vent pressure they may as well just remove it as Censored all gets filtered if its got a gaping hole in the filter. Whistle

I think it's just there to break up and silence the escaping air, it's quieter to have the air broken up by the sintered brass than just an open pipe, drilling a hole just helps it to exhaust quicker and still keeps some form of silencer...... Thumbs Up

I think its also the inlet as well as the exhaust, might be wrong though Question

I agree Pete… and I’m one of those that drilled a hole in theirs. The car was stuck up in extended mode and only supposed to go 30mph. Garage quoted £700 to fit a new compressor. Think you can get the silencer bit for less than £40. The only time you can really hear the compressor running is if the seats are folded and the carpets up.

I did try cleaning the old silencer in brake cleaner, but it had no effect….

It looks like you can get the silencers pretty cheaply from Ali Express - if you know what thread size to order :

Since no one has mentioned any downside to the silencer being missing I think I will just leave mine alone. I dont have a back box on the exhaust, and I have a platform built in the back for the dog, so I can hardly hear the compressor or the exhaust valve.
