Speedo intermittent after engine bay soaked-l322 4.4 petrol

Hi everyone, the dreaded MOT is coming up and unsurprisingly something has reared its ugly head,
after replacing the water pump, I was driving along thinking all was well, when steam erupted out from under the bonnet, I couldn't stop straight away, but only drove for a couple of minutes until it was safe to stop, i musn't have connected the top water pump hose correctly as it had popped off. after cooling down, reattached hose, topped up with water and drove home, ever since then, the speedo only works when it feels like it, any ideas what it maybe, or is it a known issue and just coincidence? any help really appreciated

Jamie

All I know about the speedo is that it’s fed from the rear left ABS signal. The reluctor ring broke when I had my TD6 and the speedo didn’t work at all. Trouble then was, the car thought it was stationary so if you tried to drive, it got the speed signal from the other 3 wheels so thought they were spinning… and applied traction control.

So if the car isn’t doing strange things when the speedo doesn’t work, the signal must be getting through to various ECUs but not the instrument cluster, so a more “local” issue, maybe under the bonnet as you suspect. If it’s doing other strange things, issue probably nearer the back….

Not a great help I know….

When you say strange things, would this include hesitating when you put your foot down, ie it starts to move for a brief moment, then pauses for a second or so, then accelerates, not sure if speedo is working as am too busy wondering if I will make it across the junction or not. It doesnt happen very often but can be very scary or annoying at times?

Get the codes read, there should be one if the ABS sensor is faulty, it could just be a coincidence with the water issue.... or not... Thumbs Up Pete

Yes, it thinks the car is stationary if the speedo reading is zero, but it’s getting wheel speed inputs, so as far as the car is concerned, they must be spinning if the car is stationary…. So it activates traction control and then winds the power back. When mine did it, I had throttle to floor and it hardly moved (or revved).

Yours then gets going again when the signal gets through….

So it’s doing “as expected” with no speedo signal…

I’d guess it’s a connection issue somewhere, I don’t know where the wires route though, sorry.
