Found the answer to my own question, you don't always have to use the press tool after resealing the vanos. New O ring and Teflon seal can just be replaced. Will give this a try 1st just have to find a spare day.

The timing tool kit was an ebay special loads on there, I didn't buy the cheapest but turns out there all the same. The deep socket to remove the vanos solinoid didn't fit so needed machining until it did. None seem to come with the locking clamps that hold the cam locking tools in place but it didn't cause a problem.

i thought i had answered this post but apparently I haven’t, thanks for your reply.
I used a cheap Chinese one too and the right hand bank is out of time according to the diagnostic tool RR 2005 4.4 petrol

Well it's been a while, 1 of the new hg failed after the rebuild so its all been stripped and done again. Just the hg this time, both of them for peace of mind with an uprated kit....heads skimmed and pressure tested all good a snapped bolt in the rear for the coolant cross over manifold was drill.out and Ali welded/plugged then redrilled and taped. I also resealed the vanos units while they were off as I didn't do it last time.

All put back together enuff for a start up today..........I can report......

IT LIVES...........IT LIVES..!!!!!!

Fingers crossed its the last time messing with the engine. Not touched the headlining yet this has been at my mates place he has done all the work for me on his spare time.

He knows these engine in and out. Once the road test is completed and we're happy with it I will get back to those little jobs I had lined up.

Car drives like new after the rebuild but I'm chasing an old oil leak behind the oil filter housing connection plate.

I have of course replaced the O rings behind the plate but my question is the bit circled in red must just be an inspection plug and it must have an O ring. Before I take it out I just wanted to know if anything apart from oil is going to come out ?.

Any ideas ?

many years ago, i did my chain guides, at 140k drove it another 65k, till i sold the car, still purring.... but with a broken gearbox... i had no issues, apart from frostbite, as i had to do it outside during one of the beast from the east cold snaps. i changed the vanos seals, with a press tool, from usa. you dig out the seals, flick some new ones in, and then use the tool, with a pole, to crush or burr over the lips, to make then seal better. it went well.. had a minor oil leak, but sorted that out. also did a lot of other brittle parts at time, like rocker covers, valley pan cover, and water pump tubes. and also a cooler thermostat upgrade. these were superb engines in their day, but the high running temps made everything so brittle, and hard, so you got leaks galore, and overheating if not kept in check. even at over 200k, the internals looked splendid. i have a similar engine in one of my other cars, an 8 series bmw but not the vanos version. i followed the beisian systems procedure, and used all bmw parts. back in the day, the tool set was 400 quid, plus another 100 for the vanos tool. the job back then cost me about 1000 with tools, which i should have sold on, as i never used them again. i think still have the crank locking bar i made to stop the engine, so you can break the crankshaft jesus nut, with a huge pole. we didn't have battery windy guns then.
...happy memories... sort of..

Yep this engine is pretty well sorted now and running like a dream just this historic oil leak which I'm sure is comming from the said counter sunk bolt, it's clearly in the oil way lookingvat the casting.......just wanted to see if anyone has pulled it before for reference before I do next week.

good luck getting that plug out
i wanted to take one out of the head, ended up welding a allen key to it
went to buy a new plug, $80 Germany only or USA one cent each $40 shipping or something
it didnt have an o ring, it was just a plug for a drilling in the oil way RR 2005 4.4 petrol

Thanks Knares, at least now I know its just a plug and nothing else. If I can't get it out I'm sure I can seal it up somehow from the outside.
Thumbs Up

Proberly explains why my guy nor me have either removed 1 before.

why not brake cleaner the front of the leak, and smear sealant over the face. -if it works, its a fix. no mechanical risk at all.
