Well it's been a while, 1 of the new hg failed after the rebuild so its all been stripped and done again. Just the hg this time, both of them for peace of mind with an uprated kit....heads skimmed and pressure tested all good a snapped bolt in the rear for the coolant cross over manifold was drill.out and Ali welded/plugged then redrilled and taped. I also resealed the vanos units while they were off as I didn't do it last time.

Car drives like new after the rebuild but I'm chasing an old oil leak behind the oil filter housing connection plate.

many years ago, i did my chain guides, at 140k drove it another 65k, till i sold the car, still purring.... but with a broken gearbox... i had no issues, apart from frostbite, as i had to do it outside during one of the beast from the east cold snaps. i changed the vanos seals, with a press tool, from usa. you dig out the seals, flick some new ones in, and then use the tool, with a pole, to crush or burr over the lips, to make then seal better. it went well.. had a minor oil leak, but sorted that out. also did a lot of other brittle parts at time, like rocker covers, valley pan cover, and water pump tubes. and also a cooler thermostat upgrade. these were superb engines in their day, but the high running temps made everything so brittle, and hard, so you got leaks galore, and overheating if not kept in check. even at over 200k, the internals looked splendid. i have a similar engine in one of my other cars, an 8 series bmw but not the vanos version. i followed the beisian systems procedure, and used all bmw parts. back in the day, the tool set was 400 quid, plus another 100 for the vanos tool. the job back then cost me about 1000 with tools, which i should have sold on, as i never used them again. i think still have the crank locking bar i made to stop the engine, so you can break the crankshaft jesus nut, with a huge pole. we didn't have battery windy guns then.

Yep this engine is pretty well sorted now and running like a dream just this historic oil leak which I'm sure is comming from the said counter sunk bolt, it's clearly in the oil way lookingvat the casting.......just wanted to see if anyone has pulled it before for reference before I do next week. |

Thanks Knares, at least now I know its just a plug and nothing else. If I can't get it out I'm sure I can seal it up somehow from the outside.

why not brake cleaner the front of the leak, and smear sealant over the face. -if it works, its a fix. no mechanical risk at all. |
