Range Rover TDV8 4.4 2011 Won’t Start

Hi,

I’ve got a Range Rover L322 4.4 TDV8 2011 and it won’t start. It doesn’t even try and crank, press the ignition switch and nothing. Big Cry I’ve plugged the diagnostic icarsoft CR Max and comes up with U121 lost communication with ABS module U126 lost communication with steering angle sensor module. I’ve had the abs module sent off and was told no issues but I can’t get into it on either Hawkeye or icarsoft CR Max. I’ve also got light on the dash, park brake fault, EBD fault, active dynamics fault, emergency brake assist not available, stability control not available, suspension fault.

The starting issue starting intermittent then just wouldn’t start. I’ve checked the wires under wheel arch and mega amp 450 and all good.

Any ideas at all would be appreciated at this point.

A lot of those errors come about when the battery is low - what's the voltage showing? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Sorry I forgot to mention it’s a brand new battery but is draining very fast too

It’s showing 12.6 at the minute but am trying to charge it up too. After a week it goes flat

If the battery is draining and it's not being used it suggests a current leak. Unlike the earlier ones these later cars are very good at shutting everything down once the ignition is off. If it's draining and is being used it suggests an alternator fault but again there is a good monitoring system and it should throw a fault code for this. I'm assuming you fitted the correct AGM battery and used the Icarsoft to update the ECU it has a new battery? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I checked the battery to make sure it’s the right one and used the icarsoft to tell it I’ve changed the battery.
I’ve checked battery terminals and as much wiring as I can to check they’re ok.
Normally you’d get the battery light flashing if it was the alternator but is there a way of checking the alternator? It’s very strange that it won’t let me access the abs module or the steering angle sensor module but this could be a red herring if it’s done it to protect the car until I can figure out what’s going on.

It’s not being used as I can’t get it to start. It was going ok beforehand just intermittent non starting then just wouldn’t start, no crank but switch is ok.

Intermittent non starting also points to the starter motor giving up. 2016 4.4 diesel

If you keep the window down or the door open, can you hear a click when you press the button?

Starter motors on the 4.4 TDV8 are quite common points of failure.

Sounds like it's wholly a battery / cable issue.


1. Check the alternator. Many smart chargers have an alternator test function. The secret menu on the infotainment system, although not entirely scientific, will give you a good idea. It should be 14.5V +/-1V when running and over 12.5V at standstill. The alternator is a known issue on 4.4 TDV8s.
2. The starter motor and/or spade terminals on its cables are known for failing. The starter motor and spade terminals are also a known issue on 4.4 TDV8s (I stress, don't just check the component. The cables must also be investigated)
3. Check the resistance of the cables to and from both the alternator and starter motor
4. Bad ground somewhere. Put a multimeter on the fuse boxes and start pulling fuses until you can tell which are the causes of the significant current draw. Then look at the likely grounding points for that circuit and use the multimeter plus fixing to confirm.

The remainder of your faults are likely complete red herrings and not faulty whatsoever. They simply show because the ECUs aren't getting the voltage or current they need to boot properly.

Also, the battery must be AGM. It might be a new battery, but it needs to be an AGM battery on the later cars. 019 AGM on the 4.4 TDV8. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I think the starter motor has died... Do you get any form of click from the starter? Might need to turn the HVAC blowers to off so you can hear... Try several times if you can, foot on brake peddle, and press & hold the starter button...

Most of your dash faults will be there because your car has not started so can easily be ignored sir... Thumbs Up
