Playing MP3 files from USB stick

I decided to get a 32GB mem key and fill it with MP3 files, and leave this permanently connected in the car.
After successfully testing with a handful of files in the root of the key, I went ahead and converted 10GB of M4a files to MP3.
I then created a similar folder structure to that of my existing MP3 library (artist/album/track title), and moved this onto the key.
In total this took around six hours!

Only now the Range Rover system cannot see any playable content, in fact it sees the root as empty?

I suspect that the system cannot read subfolders ( although it supports this within the iOS devices), but it is also possible that it supports no folder structure at all?

I have read around and general consensus is that (despite land rovers claims) mixed formats are not supported, not an issue for me as all files are MP3.

I also found this; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eq9bBb4W1x8...ata_player which looks like an official LR video. This suggests that folders are supported.

Before I spend another couple of hours "unstructuring" the library I though I'd see if you guys had any expiences to share?

It would be a complete bunch of @r$€ if all tracks have to sit in the root, giving no album/artist search possibilities. Gerry

I have a more modest 4gb usb stick with 13 double albums on it. Each album in its own folder with each disc in its own sub folder for example Album 001 with subfolder 001-CD1 and 001-CD2. If I skip a track it moves onto the next track or if its the last track in a folder it plays the first tract in the next folder.

The Portable Audio Device option when selected displays the folders on the right hand side then when selected the sub folders and then the tracks. Thumbs Up

Could it be the system cannot cope with 32gb Rolling Eyes

I can't believe I am mad enough to be posting a reply this late or more importantly that I unlocked the front door and went out to my car just to check to make sure Shocked Shocked

Thanks for checking Thumbs Up

It's seem s odd that it could read 1 albums worth of tracks, but cannot cope with multiple folders? Gerry

I'm with Andy on this theory, 32Gb is big for an ageing system to cope with.... Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

I had the same concern, hence checking it would function with a few tracks before the mass conversion Smile

As it worked initially i assumed, possibly incorrectly, that it would work with a large amount of data.
i will experiment with a 4GB key.

Thumbs Up Gerry

Yup 4GB key works.

Wink

bit pathetic it cannot support a decent chunk of memory.................I wonder if this is also why it will not index my entire phone book? Gerry

Gerry, rather than waiting for an official answer from Land Rover perhaps you can experiment with 8gb , 16gb memory stick and tell us all which is the largest one that will actually work correctly Rolling with laughter

Ok. It will read a 16GB card with approx 12GB of data. These mp3 files are structured as per original post
Thumbs Up Gerry

Also, try to keep the number of files in each folder to a minimum.

On my Audi (which can seriously only take a 4GB SD card) you can have either x files/folders in the root, or x folders with x files inside each one. The first option severely limits capacity, whilst the second one makes search, shuffle and playback more difficult vastly increases capacity.

Remember, computers see folders ( directories) as files.

So try something like 100 folders, each with 100 files in. However I suspect 32GB is just too big. You could try resizing the partition? .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

Hi Gerry, thank you for your experimental efforts Thumbs Up

I think, in conclusion we can say that the USB connection in a 2010MY onwards will work with a maximum 16GB memory stick Bow down

I've had similar issues with large capacity SD cards of 32MB. They are supposed to work in my laptop and camcorder, but for some reason, even when they are empty, can't be read or identified. Discovery 4 HSE

My iPhone is 32GB and it reads all the files...99% of which is music...

Edit: Just dawned on me that the iPhone connector is a different port altogether...does seem odd though.
