Apologies if this has been asked many times before but what are your brand / spec recommendations for 5w30 oil?

I have just taken delivery of a very well looked after 2009 3.6 TDV8 Vogue with 142,000 on the clock and want to perform an oil and filter change as the last one was done by JLR in January.

Last basic question, what’s the correct amount to put in?

If you go to the Wiki section of this site, there's a downloadable version of the workshop manual - good to have stored on your computer.

Service fill is 9.5 litres so, I'd check the dip stick and see how full it is before you drain, work out how much you've drained and then put that amount back in, up to a maximum of 9 litres then check the dip stick and adjust accordingly. Sump plugs are only a couple of £ so, it's good practice to put a new sump plug on whilst you're at it.

Quite easy to work out - in off road height, you can normally fit a bucket underneath these cars and most buckets have litre markings in them. To get the most out, have the sump drain facing ever so slightly downhill - either by angle on your driveway or just put a small bit of wood under the opposing front wheel. Leave the driver's door open at all times to lock the suspension in place.

Put some tarpaulin or cardboard boxes down with a 60cm or more radius, to prevent any oil splash or droplets getting on the driveway. Although, a bucket is much higher than an oil drain pan and prevents a lot more splashback than a drain pan would.

Long term consider investing in an oil vacuum. Draper make a good 10L professional one (about £130) and Sealey tools make a 12V pump (about £25). The tubes just go down the dipstick tube to the sump and suck the oil out, with no need to get under the car.

Also make sure you're got the correct oil filter socket size and a small torque wrench which can go as low as the 25-30Nm needed. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

MOST importantly over and above the great information above is SAFETY SAFETY SAFETY!!! ALWAYS use an axle stand! Even if you leave your wheels on! If there is a catastrophic failure of an EAS component! There is not room under a fatty for me with no air in the EAS system! 👍

As the car has full main dealer service history from day 1 part of me is thinking to just take it JLR to keep the service paper work looking correct. The other half of me hates overspending. The solution in the middle is going to a respected specialist.

The vehicle is 13 years old. It's not worth spending main dealer money anymore.

It's best to do an oil change on these V8s every 5,000-7,000 miles so, I'm my opinion, it's an asset to learn to do it yourself. Everything is easily accessible so, they're a doddle to service. Even a full service shouldn't take you more than an hour.

Keep the parts receipts for services, write on the date you serviced it and mileage and stick it in your service folder! Any respectful future buyer would totally accept this as proof of service history. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Appreciate all the replies so far. Will go for one of these two, always been a Castrol man but looking at the Shell option too after the recommend. Interesting it’s listed as a JLR recommend, wonder what they use in the dealerships! Any ideas?

Went for the Shell option as found 10L online for £64 delivered and a Bosch filter for £14.

Does the 3.6 not need low ash oil? The 4.4 needs AF-L shell helix. The one you've shown is just AF.
