Hi all,

So, what I thought would be an easy job today replacing the rear left height sensor has become anything but!

Got the connector block off, released it from the hanger bracket so I could pull it up into the car to check the length of the wire (all good, thankfully!).

I've tried to unscrew the torx bolts from the sensor and to my surprise, they just spin and spin...

Any recommendations on how I might get them both out bearing in mind the space under there? Or shall I give up and get the pro's to sort it?

To get the best help Sir, it would be handy if you completed your profile to indicate which model Car you have, due to differences with equipment / fittings / fasteners used on various models. ie L322 / L405

The bolts screw into a metal insert which is pressed into the plastic body of the sensor. That insert has separated from the plastic and is now spinning along with the bolt. It won't come out without some "persuasion".

As you're replacing them, the easiest thing to do is cut through the plastic body (alongside the bracket) and through the bolt. You should have access with a hacksaw blade or junior hacksaw.

Obviously, you'll need replacement bolts.

The parts catalogue for these torx bolts is wrong too... I ordered them for my RR and the bolts that arrived weren't even similar. I never got a solution so cleaned up the old ones and reused them.

There isn't a metal bush in there either (or at least there wasn't on my 2007) as it's a self tapping screw.

If you're fitting a new sensor, get some big self tapping stainless steel screws and use those.

Mine definitely had metal inserts and used machine screws, not self tappers.

Who knows what's in there!

I managed to get a Dremel in the tight space this morning and cut the sensor out .

My replacement sensor definitely has a metal bush that takes machine screws.

I also took the opportunity to pull the sensor wiring up into the car through the fuel tank access panel. I've read that some faults are caused by the wires chaffing the tank.

Happy to report there is no damage to the wiring & my adaptive dynamics error is gone

I also treated the car to some new wheel nuts, had to get a 23mm & 24mm socket on the existing ones as some had swollen so much!

Do you happen to know what size torx the bolts were? I’m doing my front one… got it off and the bolts are solid and I need the bracket for the new sensor….

I got some M6 bolts from Halfords which were too small.

I had to purchase these socket cap multi-pack of screws from Halfords: https://www.halfords.com/motoring/tools/fu...82041.html

The correct bolt size from that pack was HEX 5x25mm.
