Pulled up to a set of traffic lights a couple of days ago, on a slight incline, and put gearbox into PARK as usual, but then clunk clunk clunk it started moving forward! Just stopped in time before hitting car in front Also happening if on an upward incline. Doesn't happen everytime, but even on the level it will try to pull forward.

Is this an adjustment thing or a more expensive problem. Gearbox only 2 years old having replaced it (LR) after it seized up.

All help and advice appreciated.

Are the other aspects of the gearbox fine? Does it drive ok other than creeping forward in Park?

I'm not surprised of the clunks if the car is moving forward in P as there is a bloody great ratchet type affair to stop it moving.

Your park pin has failed. This is generally due to people using park rather than the HB. Happens a lot on big heavy cars.

When you stop on a hill you should apply the HB and let that take the slack, then and only then select park as is documented in the handbook.

AFAIK it cant be repaired in situ. 

i put it N and sit on the foot brake, back to drive when ready to go.

He even gives it a feeling of procedure... brake, neutral, handbrake, release brake, brake, park, release brake. Uff....

I don't know about the creeping forward but the poor guy in the car behind must have heart failure as the reversing lights come on just as you are about to pull away I've always been told stop, EPB on (ahem, isn't that why it's calls a PARKING brake) and then into N. BTW I also get really p d off sat atbtraffic lights behind somebody stopped in front holding the car on the footbrake, especially at night on a wet night. in all the auto's i've had i have always left the car in drive with the footbrake on, except occasionally with the RR the transfer box noise? gets a bit loud because of the 20'' wheels on the car , then i just stick it in neutral. ... - .- -.

So would this have been fitted new as a part of the new gearbox going in - should it have been? Or integral part of gearbox itself? .

It's part of the output shaft - so internal.

It sounds as if your pin is bent because it latches sometimes - this usually happens if the car is parked on a steep slope and held with park - or P is engaged before being stopped.

Thought I would give an update on this. Haven't been to the stealer yet, but the problem is getting worse. I believe it is all about the gearstick not locating correctly rather than the park pin. it is becoming more difficult to select a gear position, and on occasion it will not stay in Drive, just bounces out into Neutral. Also will not locate properly in Park; when I come to start up the car it will not start so have to go into Neutral then start the car.

Tonight on the way home, in traffic, I put it in Neutral and handbrake on, then went to move off so put into Drive but it wouldn't go in, just bounced out again. So pushed the stick over into Manual and drove on.

First time really had a go at Manual - its quite forgiving, will kick down if you are going to slowly for a gear or if you accelerate in a high gear from low speed, but gives you that manual box braking experience if you whack it down a gear when slowing. Fun.

So feeling happier its not the park pin but sadder that there seems to be a real problem with the gearstick connections  .

Which you shouldn't, because the gearbox won't need to be removed to have the problem rectified (if the selector/adjustment really is the problem) = much cheaper for you.
I wouldn't procrastinate, because you'll likely end up doing internal gearbox damage if the adjustment is that far off.

EDIT: Wow- just looked back at the dates and noticed you started this thread in Feb. Joe, don't be foolish. Have it looked at before you end up needing to spring for a gearbox. Do you run around for months on end with decaying teeth in your mouth so you can get dentures rather than fillings?
