Rubbery Stuff! 4.4 TDV8

Afternoon chaps!

After a couple of weeks of getting used to my new toy, it's time to get digging.

First up - oily bits (O-Rings should do it - the cooler seems to be dry).

Second - hoses etc. I've attached a couple of shots of the general intake filth. Recommendations please: replace it all, from the throttle body to the intake, or just "tape" the throttle body seal and replace the donut hoses for now and keep an eye on things.

I'm not driving any short distance stuff - it's all Autobahn and country road runs, so I'm not too worried about new gunk gathering. Yet...

What say you?

I gather there are updated part numbers for most of this stuff now - care to share?

If you have the old style connectors then replace them as they will fail at some point. Either buy the updated ones or just cut some silicone reinforced hose up for a good as fix but way cheaper. If the throttle elbow seal is not leaking just leave it IMO but keep an eye on it. Clean the map sensor every oil service. The soot / oil gunk builds up no matter how you drive as the EGR valve is open most of the time and the turbo leaks oil ( they all do) but if you change the oil more regularly than the official intervals it will have less soot in it to add to the gunk load. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Swap out the 4 hoses for silicone ones. Loads of threads on this. Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Unnecessary quote removed

Replace the old 4x hoses with a length of 70mm internal diameter - silicone or rubber. You've got the old type so need jubilee clips too. Cut the sizes you need off the length of hose. The genuine parts would cost about £130 for all 4, when all they are is a length of rubber hose anyway so, just purchase a length and cut what you need.

The plastic intake pipe to the throttle body, take it off and check for a collapsed seal. Here's one with the highlighted areas showing where the seal has collapsed:

The options are to put gas specification PTFE tape around the throttle body to provide a new seal (as below. A roll is around £0.50 in the UK) or replace the whole part (£170/€250 ish). The part number is LR022663. The seal can't be purchased on its own.

Well, after a bit more digging, I found the throttle body gunk was simply due to the plastic flange not being properly seated on the throttle body itself. After careful removal and cleaning of the whole assembly, it’s all back together and thanks to a length of ultra-fancy high-temp silicone sealing tape, the whole thing is a tight as a badger’s and there are no more audible air intake leaks.

The difference in noise levels around the intake is incredible and the fatty is much more direct on the throttle. Funny no codes were thrown…

Next up - donut hoses.

I’ve recently done the lot on mine - throttle body was hard to come by, I also cleaned a load of gunk out of the donut and various connections.

The car does feel much crisper under acceleration but I won’t know if it’s fixed my intermittent restricted performance issue until it doesn’t happen.

None of it’s too hard, just a bit fiddly here and there but the guides in the wiki will see you right and it is kind of satisfying to know that it’s all clean in there - for a while anyway.
